Prof. “Shakespeare” Krishna Pillai, Gopi, leads a happy, stable family life with his wife Sarada, Srividya, a devoted homemaker, and their children—three daughters and one son. Their neighbor is Indira Thampi, KPAC Lalitha, an unmarried woman who endured a failed college romance, and her niece Asha Thampi, Revathi, who lives with her to attend college.
Asha’s good friend Unnikrishnan, Mohanlal, is the college sports coach and a family friend of the professor. He shares a love of music with Sarada, and they vibe well, which Asha misreads as a sign of something more between them. Unnikrishnan grows irritated by what he sees as Asha’s immature behavior.
Disheartened, Asha pretends to be in love with the professor as revenge. The professor was hesitant but slowly begins to like her; he starts going out with her to night clubs, which worries Sarada. She informs Indira, and Indira scolds Asha. In retaliation, Asha leaves Indira’s house but has nowhere to go and is helped by the professor, who arranges for her admission to the YWCA hostel.
All the while, Asha avoids Unnikrishnan, who feels insulted. At the YWCA hostel, he barges into her room; he asks about the relationship with the professor, but she doesn’t give a clear reply. Unnikrishnan tells Sarada about Asha’s immaturity.
The professor begins distancing from Sarada, prompting a confrontation in front of their children. He leaves home and stays in a hotel. He calls his family but hesitates to talk to Sarada. He faces a dilemma over whether to stay with his family or Asha. The next day, he brings Asha to his hotel room and tries to be intimate, but she is uncomfortable. Unnikrishnan arrives, confronts Asha, and she finally reveals the truth about the affair, hugging Unnikrishnan in front of the professor, leaving him heartbroken.
Out of shame, the professor drinks heavily on the beach in his car. Unnikrishnan spots him and brings him home. After sobering up, he reconciles with his wife and kids.
