An emotionally stunted 26-year-old woman named Old Dolio Dyne finds herself entangled in a manipulative relationship with her con artist parents, who view her more as an accomplice in their petty crimes than as their daughter. The family struggles to pay back rent of $1,500 for their less-than-ideal apartment in Los Angeles, which is actually an office space that leaks and is attached to a soap factory.

In an attempt to alleviate their financial woes, Old Dolio devises a plan involving an elaborate scam: they will fly to New York City using the tickets they won in a contest. The scheme entails her parents taking possession of her luggage at the baggage claim, while Old Dolio reports it lost, allowing her to collect on the travel insurance to cover their overdue rent.

After what can be described as an uneventful trip, Old Dolio and her parents return home to find themselves unexpectedly chatting with Melanie, a friendly young woman seated beside them during the flight. To Old Dolio’s astonishment, her parents confide in Melanie about their scam, enlisting her to pretend to be their daughter when retrieving the luggage. Upon filing a report about her “lost luggage,” Old Dolio is informed that the insurance check could take up to six weeks to arrive, prompting the family to explore alternative means of acquiring cash.

Melanie eagerly immerses herself in their world and soon admits to fabricating her occupation as a physician’s assistant; in reality, she works as a clerk in an eyeglass store. In a twist of fate, she introduces the family to one of her elderly clients, leading to a stolen blank check that they cash for $650. The plot takes a darker turn when another dying client asks them to masquerade as his loved ones in his final moments. This experience leaves Old Dolio rattled, especially as she witnesses her parents rush to comfort Melanie, further alienating her.

Upon returning home, Old Dolio finds the long-awaited insurance check has arrived. However, her parents’ intentions become more convoluted as they attempt to initiate a threesome with Melanie, who vehemently declines. A heart-wrenching confrontation ensues when Old Dolio overhears her mother affectionately refer to Melanie as “hon.” In desperation, Old Dolio offers her entire travel insurance payout to her mother, who declines, while Melanie accepts Old Dolio’s offer, leading to an emotional bond that fills the void her parents had neglected.

The evening unfolds with Old Dolio’s parents presenting her a necklace and vowing to change their ways.

Later, at Melanie’s place, Old Dolio is tucked into bed. As Melanie treads cautiously, she warns Old Dolio that if her parents have indeed pilfered the insurance money, it demonstrates their lack of love. Conversely, if the cash remains, it could signify a change of heart. She suggests the third possibility where only a fraction is left, indicating a love that falls short. To their astonishment, they discover the entire sum intact.

Facing a twist of fate the next morning, they awaken to find Melanie’s apartment ransacked; all valuable items, including the cash hidden away, have vanished. The sole remnants are Old Dolio’s 17 presents. With determination, they decide to return these gifts, culminating in a total refund of $485.05—until the realization hits that they forgot to return Old Dolio’s necklace, bringing their total to an exact $525, equating to her share of the insurance money. In a moment filled with newfound affection, Old Dolio and Melanie share a kiss in the store, bridging the emotional gaps that had once defined them.
