In the early days of World II, an American correspondent and his wife arrive in London after evacuations. She suffers a shrapnel wound and loses her baby, prompting her return to the United States. Back in England, the weary journalist is assigned a story on war‑orphaned children, where he encounters Margaret, and their lives intersect.
