The story, based on true events, follows young Margaret Catchpole in a coastal English village where she is courted by smuggler Will Laud and Coast Guard Lieutenant Barry. Favoring Laud, she steals a horse to join him after a raid, but a clash with the guards leaves Laud dead, Margaret arrested for horse‑theft, and ultimately deported to Botany Bay. Only fragments of the film survive today.
