What Happens in Jogan: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of Jogan (1950) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

Vijay [Dilip Kumar] is intrigued and attracted by the young hermit [Purnima] who has recently arrived in the village, and he tries to talk to her to understand why she chose a life of a hermit at such a young age.

After many attempts, the hermit [Purnima] finally shares the reason behind her choice, explaining that before she met him she had peace of mind. She reveals that she used to write love poems, but her family forced her into an arranged marriage with an old man, and she ran away from home to become a hermit. Vijay asks if she could lend him the book of poems she wrote.

She finds her peace of mind wavering because of his presence and his compelling devotion toward her. Eventually she decides to leave the village so that she does not fall prey to the binding emotions that pose a risk to her soul's journey onward.

Vijay confronts her, asking whether changing the place would change her sentiments too, but the answer is not enough to sway her. The hermit pleads with him to not follow her any further than the tree at the border of the village.

The hermit, on the advice of her guru, fasts for days to complete her penance. Vijay often tries to go find her but cannot pass beyond the tree, remembering her request.

One day someone comes to him with a book of love poems. Upon receiving it, Vijay is extremely happy and wonders if he can go and meet her, only to be told that now he can only visit her grave.
