The whole story of Ivanukku Thannila Kandam (2015) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

Saravanan, Deepak Dinkar, is a television anchor facing a string of difficult times in both his professional life and his personal world. He finds himself being outpaced at work by a resentful colleague, harassed by a ruthless loan shark, and increasingly anxious that his girlfriend Neha Ratnakaran Deepika might be cheating on him.

To cope, he heads to a party with his friends and ends up getting heavily intoxicated. In that fog, he confides his troubles to a mysterious hitman named Mark, portrayed by Rajendran, who offers a chilling solution: he will remove Saravanan’s problems by killing the coworker, the loan shark, and Deepika. The morning after, Saravanan discovers that both the coworker and the loan shark are dead, and he receives a call from Mark recounting their conversation from the night before.

Panicked, Saravanan tries to prevent Mark from turning his gaze toward Deepika. As he attempts to intervene, Mark makes a move to murder Deepika, but falls from a ledge and dies — a fact Saravanan remains unaware of, since he was drunk when he first met the hitman.

As the truth unfolds, it’s revealed that Mark’s targets died by accident before he could carry out any of the killings. Still in the dark about Mark’s death, Saravanan later marries Deepika, only to be consumed by paranoia that every man who comes near her might secretly be the killer stalking her. The film threads a tense, paranoid atmosphere as the protagonist grapples with the aftermath of a nightmarish request and the tenuous line between danger and coincidence.

Ivanukku Thannila Kandam Plot Explained: Your Questions Answered

The questions people ask most about Ivanukku Thannila Kandam (2015): what happens in the confusing scenes, why the characters do what they do, the twists, hidden details and what the ending means. Each answer contains spoilers.

Q1

Did Mark actually kill Saravanan's enemies or did they die by accident?

The twist reveals that Mark never actually killed anyone. Both the coworker and the loan shark died by accident before Mark could carry out any of the killings. This means Saravanan's drunken request, while morally troubling, did not directly result in murder, though he believed otherwise throughout most of the film.

Q2

Why does Saravanan become paranoid about every man near Deepika?

After learning about Mark's plan to kill Deepika and receiving a call from Mark recounting their conversation, Saravanan lives in constant fear that the hitman is still out there. Even after marrying Deepika, he becomes paranoid that any man who interacts with her could secretly be Mark, the killer he hired. This psychological damage remains unresolved because he never learns that Mark already died.

Q3

What happens to the hitman Mark in the movie?

Mark attempts to murder Deepika but during the struggle, he falls from a ledge and dies. However, Saravanan remains unaware of this because he was drunk when he first met Mark and never learns of the hitman's death. The film ends with Saravanan still believing Mark is alive and hunting him.

Q4

Why does Saravanan tell a stranger at the party to kill his problems?

Saravanan was heavily intoxicated at the party and in a state of desperation. Facing professional humiliation from his rival, harassment from a loan shark, and suspicion about Deepika's fidelity, he confides his troubles to a mysterious stranger (Mark) who he believes is a hitman. The alcohol lowered his inhibitions and judgment, leading him to make a reckless confession he would not have made sober.

Q5

Why does Saravanan marry Deepika despite knowing about the murder plan?

Saravanan marries Deepika because he genuinely loves her and wants to protect her from the perceived threat. He believes hiring Mark was a mistake that put her in danger, so marrying her becomes his way of trying to shield her. However, the marriage does not resolve his paranoia, it intensifies it, as he continues to fear that Mark or someone like him could still target her.

Q6

Who is Mark and how did he know about Saravanan's problems?

Mark presents himself as a hitman who approaches people at their lowest points. While intoxicated, Saravanan confides all his problems to Mark, the rivalry at work, the loan shark harassment, and his suspicion about Deepika's infidelity. Mark uses this information to offer his chilling solution. The film never fully reveals Mark's true background, but his targets all died by accident before he could act.

Q7

Why doesn't Saravanan go to the police after learning about the murders?

Saravanan is paralyzed by guilt and fear. He knows he asked a hitman to kill people, which makes him an accomplice in his own mind. Going to the police would require him to admit his role in hiring a killer. Additionally, he is desperate to protect Deepika and believes he can handle the situation himself. His guilt and the fear of legal consequences prevent him from seeking help.

Q8

How did the coworker and loan shark actually die?

Both the coworker and the loan shark died in accidents before Mark could kill them. The film reveals this as the central twist, that Saravanan's drunken request for murder never actually resulted in intentional killings. The deaths appeared connected to Mark's threats but were purely coincidental, which reframes the entire moral dilemma Saravanan faced.

Q9

What is the ending of the movie and why does the fear remain?

The film ends with Saravanan marrying Deepika, but he remains consumed by paranoia that any man who speaks to her could be Mark. He never discovers that Mark died in the fall, so the threat feels永远 real to him. The ending is bittersweet, while he has the outward trappings of happiness, the psychological damage from that drunken night leaves him trapped in perpetual fear and suspicion.
