Viktor, Luke Goss, is a professional assassin, and the film unfolds through flashbacks as Viktor explains to a disgraced filmmaker how he became the killer he is.
His lost, violent childhood unfolds in a Bucharest slum, where two bullying debt-payers and a mafia threat push him toward survival by joining the local crime network. Sergei, Danny Midwinter, the mafia lieutenant, takes him in after Viktor proves his mettle. When he returns home, Viktor witnesses his father abusing his mother; not long after, his father is assassinated for failing to repay his debt to the mafia.
Viktor’s first job inside the organization is to collect money owed, but the target belittles him and pays with his life. Viktor ends the man’s life and is about to kill the man’s wife and their two young daughters when Sergei intervenes. This brutal moment cemented Viktor’s path, and he is moved to the city to be trained as a hitman. Sergei teaches him to blend in, listen, infiltrate, and eliminate, and he also trains Viktor in a darkest philosophy: to destroy a strong man, strike at the people he loves. > Sometimes, a simple bullet is not enough.
The ascent and the brutal code. As an adult, Viktor and Sergei take on a drug deal involving Franco, the son of their boss Traficant. Franco’s reckless move forces Viktor and Sergei to kill the drug vendor and his bodyguards, only to discover the vendor is the son of a powerful boss, Vadim. To cover their tracks, Viktor and Sergei scramble the evidence, but tensions rise: Sergei tries to move against Viktor, gets disarmed, and is captured. He reveals that Traficant ordered Viktor’s death, leaving Viktor to escape by staging his own death with a body double and burning his apartment.
Viktor re-emerges in London, where he accepts increasingly dangerous assignments for a London mafia boss. He retrieves a wanted informant, and then makes a calculated kill of a British police officer who cannot be bought, using liquid nicotine in the officer’s coffee to cause a fatal heart attack. A celebration with the boss and two women is cut short when the boss’s lieutenant betrays them; Viktor eliminates the lieutenant, declines to take his place, and is asked to kill a female reporter who is writing about him.
In a busy coffee shop, Viktor intervenes when a group of thugs grab a woman and brutalize her. He saves her and learns her name is Bethesda, Caroline Tillette, and the two quickly fall in love. Six months later, Bethesda is pregnant, and Viktor reacts with a complicated mix of fear and resolve. He tracks down the reporter to show mercy and urges her to leave the country and start anew. He longs to quit his life, but the pull of his old world won’t release him, and his childhood friend Cesar tracks him down with a deadly intention — he tries to kill Viktor, but the outcome goes the other way.
Back in Bucharest, Viktor discovers the two old bullies have become mafia men themselves. Two shots later, he confronts Traficant in a restaurant and shoots him. He then commands Alexei to bury video evidence that Viktor is alive, warning that news of his return will bring consequences.
The interview’s ending looms, Bethesda arrives again, and Viktor hands the interviewer a ring that belonged to his brother. Bethesda recounts the story of two girls taken from their father and sold into servitude; one sister is weaker and dies, but the other—the survivor, Bethesda—lives. The interview is a trap, and Viktor shoots the interviewer.
In a final, uneasy moment, Viktor sits with Bethesda, who then shoots him with the gun the interviewer dropped. She reveals that Viktor killed Bethesda’s parents when he began his career, and that she used him and engineered the downfall of the interviewer and Viktor himself. She reveals that the baby she carries is a boy, and when the boy is old enough she will show him the video so he can know what kind of man his father was and despise him.
