Three years before the main events, Matteï retires from the mafia and hands the business to his old friend Tony Zacchia. He settles into a peaceful life with his wife and two children. His past, however, begins to catch up with him when he is ambushed later that night.

An eight-man hit squad ambushes Matteï in a parking lot, killing his dog and leaving him for dead with 22 bullets in his body. Against all odds, he survives and begins to formulate a plan for revenge. The attack marks a turning point as his peaceful life collapses.

Matteï confronts his past directly and tries to identify those behind the ambush without inciting more bloodshed. He recognizes the danger to his family and struggles to stay resolute. This restraint is exploited by his enemies, fueling the hunt.

Marie Goldman, the police detective, begins investigating the parking lot shooting. Her own husband, a cop, was killed but the killer was never caught. She pursues truth despite indifferent superiors, hoping to clear the homicide.

With his family situation deteriorating due to a kidnapped son, Matteï makes a fragile deal with Goldman to exchange information. Goldman wrestles with duty versus vengeance and weighs Zacchia's involvement in the crime.

The police obtain a USB drive containing data incriminating Tony Zacchia in a money fraud and laundering operation. The new evidence strengthens Matteï's case against his former ally. It also gives Goldman leverage in pursuing justice.

Matteï rescues his kidnapped son and confronts Zacchia at his home. Zacchia nearly turns the tables and kills Matteï, but the police intervene just in time and arrest them both. The tide of justice appears to shift, leaving Matteï with uneasy relief.

Goldman reveals that one of the eight shooters missed Matteï on purpose during the initial shootout. Matteï discovers the shooter was his friend and lawyer, forced by Zacchia to shoot him. He forgives his friend, ending with a moment of quiet reconciliation.

With insufficient evidence to charge Matteï, the police release him. He walks along a beach with his family, and his voiceover states that he has left his past behind and will spend the remaining time in peace.
