In 1953, the film introduces young Elise Rainier, who lives with her mother Audrey, brother Christian, and father Gerald in New Mexico. Gerald works as an executioner in a prison, setting an ominous backdrop for their family life.

Following a prisoner's execution, Elise begins to experience supernatural occurrences, showcasing her unusual gift. She starts to know intimate details about the executed prisoner, raising concerns from her father Gerald.
