Incendiary

A young East Ender woman, Michelle Williams, is married to bomb-disposal officer Lenny, Nicholas Gleaves, and they have a four-year-old son. She begins an affair with a reporter named Jasper, Ewan McGregor. Tragedy strikes when a terrorist attack carried out by six suicide bombers at a football match kills Lenny, their son, and about 1000 others.

In the wake of the catastrophe, Jasper and Terrence Butcher, Matthew Macfadyen (the head of the anti-terrorist division), attempt to comfort the mother and share in her grief, though their conversations are tinted by the complexities of love and loyalty. As the investigation unfolds, the mother begins to piece together the bombers’ network, and her life takes a course she never anticipated.

Through Jasper’s investigation into the bombing, Michelle Williams discovers the identity of one of the terrorists. She then befriends the terrorist’s teenage son, Usman Khokhar, who only knows that his father is missing since the attacks. When he learns what his father did, he panics and runs, causing the police to suspect him of involvement in the plot. As he attempts to pull something from his pocket, the authorities shoot at him, despite him being unarmed. The mother, who had tried to shield him, is wounded but survives.

Later, the terrorist’s wife, Sasha Behar, and her son apologize to the mother for her husband’s actions, offering a rare moment of remorse amid the violence. Terrence confesses to the mother that he knew a suicide attack was going to happen and could have stopped it, but he did not in order to continue his investigation into the terrorist group. He says he did not know which stadium would be targeted, and he expected it to be on a smaller scale. He also reveals that, although he knew Lenny and his son would be at the game, he did not warn them.

Throughout the film, for therapeutic reasons, the mother writes a letter addressed to Osama bin Laden, who is assumed to be responsible for the attack. In the final scenes, the mother learns she has another son by Jasper, who is seen running to the hospital and asking for her at the nursing station, a quiet, hopeful note amid the lasting pain of the tragedy.

This is a somber, character-driven drama that interrogates guilt, memory, and the long shadows cast by acts of violence.
