In the serene suburbs of late 1970s America, Jean (Rachel Brosnahan), a devoted homemaker, has settled into her life alongside her husband Eddie (Bill Heck), a cunning thief. Although the couple has accepted their struggle to conceive or adopt children, Jean finds comfort in her predictable routine. However, her life is upended when Eddie surprises her with a baby boy named Harry—a gift that throws her into the chaotic world of motherhood. With the assistance of Cal (Arinzé Kene), an enigmatic associate of Eddie’s business partner Jimmy, Jean’s joy quickly turns to turmoil as she realizes her husband has mysteriously vanished.

The fallout from Eddie’s disappearance strikes hard when Jimmy pays Jean a nocturnal visit, delivering a bag of cash and instructing her to flee for her safety. With Cal’s help, Jean relocates to a remote suburban home, where she is warned against forming any significant ties with her new neighbors. Days drag on, and the weight of isolation begins to take its toll on Jean, yet her instinctive maternal nature compels her to connect with Evelyn (Marceline Hugot), a widowed neighbor.

One evening, while taking Harry for a peaceful stroll beneath the twinkling stars, Jean is jolted by the terrifying realization that their new sanctuary has been compromised. In a panic, she calls the emergency number Cal provided, only to find herself racing to Evelyn’s home, where chaos erupts. Eddie’s former associates, desperate to extract information from Jean, violently assault Evelyn, leaving her bound and defenseless. Just in time, Cal arrives to rescue Jean and Harry, dispatching the intruders with ruthless precision. Amidst the turmoil, Jean finds allies in Teri (Marsha Stephanie Blake), Cal’s wife, and their son Paul, as well as Art (Frankie Faison), Cal’s elderly father. Under Art’s guidance, Jean learns to handle a gun, adapting her skills to navigate the harshness of her new reality. As she starts to piece together the remnants of Eddie’s troubled history, including Teri’s harrowing escape from his abusive grip, Jean is driven to ally with Teri to confront Cal and uncover the truth behind her husband’s disappearance.

In their quest, Jean and Teri delve into the vibrant nightlife, but their mission is interrupted by a sudden shootout that leaves Jean disoriented and separated from Teri. Undeterred, Jean pursues her friend, only to uncover that Teri had been living a drastically different life away from their criminal affiliations, having harbored a complicated past with Cal during their time under Eddie’s control. This revelation sends Jean spiraling through feelings of confusion and betrayal as she grapples with her relationships.

The distance between Teri and Jean grows, forcing Jean to operate independently in her search for Cal, who reveals the crushing news of Eddie’s death. This new reality accelerates the trio’s desperate escape from the city, yet they are intercepted by Mike (James McMenamin), a merciless gang leader who captures Jean at gunpoint. Unwilling to succumb, Jean confronts her doubts regarding Eddie’s demise when Mike demands she disclose Cal’s whereabouts. With her newfound resilience, Jean arms herself with a pistol handed to her by Teri, displaying fierce defiance by taking Mike down.

The aftermath of this conflict unites Jean with Teri and Cal once more, yet their moment of peace is short-lived as they discover the gruesome aftermath of Art’s sacrifice—his demise came only after he bravely fought off two hitmen sent by Mike. As they pull themselves back from despair, they discover Paul and Harry alive, leading to an emotional reunion among the families.
