A successful career woman, Jenna Davis [Gina Philips] is preparing to go on maternity leave when her doctor advises bed-rest. Her pregnancy care will then involve a nurse who makes routine home visits to monitor her health. When a seemingly pleasant nurse, Lynn Mallory, arrives, she administers a set of vitamins that unexpectedly knock Jenna out.

Jenna awakens in the hospital to find Tom Robbins [Warren Christie] is the father of her baby, a child she had named Madeline, a fact he hadn't even known about. A doctor then delivers shocking news: Madeline was stillborn. Soon, a police detective arrives with a theory that the baby’s death was not natural, but a calculated murder meant to protect Jenna's career.

Remembering that Lynn Mallory gave the vitamins, Jenna asks to speak with her, only to be told there is no Lynn Mallory on the hospital staff and to learn that her child's remains were cremated. With these inconsistencies, Jenna and Tom decide they must uncover what happened to Madeline.

They begin a cautious, rediscovered romance as they pursue leads that point to a baby-broker connected to Lynn, a development that suggests a far more intricate conspiracy than they initially imagined. The search tests their trust, pushes them to confront painful truths about motherhood, ambition, and the high stakes of protecting a career at the expense of family.

Facing danger and deception, the couple presses on to piece together the mystery behind Madeline’s fate, hoping to bring clarity to a case that seems to blur the line between vengeance, profit, and parental love.

My Baby Is Missing Plot Explained: Your Questions Answered

The questions people ask most about My Baby Is Missing (2007): what happens in the confusing scenes, why the characters do what they do, the twists, hidden details and what the ending means. Each answer contains spoilers.

Q1

Why does Jenna discover there is no record of Lynn Mallory at the hospital?

Lynn Mallory is revealed to be a fake identity used by a baby-broker. She posed as a prenatal nurse to gain access to Jenna and steal her baby. The hospital has no record of her because she never existed, she fabricated her credentials to carry out the scheme undetected.

  • lynn mallory
  • fake nurse
  • baby broker
  • hospital record
Q2

How did the vitamins cause the stillbirth?

The vitamins Lynn gave Jenna were not prenatal supplements but a labor-inducing drug. This caused premature labor, resulting in the stillbirth. The police initially suspected Jenna herself of taking the drug to induce labor and kill the baby to protect her career, before the conspiracy was uncovered.

Foreshadowing: Earlier, Lynn administers vitamins during a routine home visit, framed as standard prenatal care.

  • vitamins
  • induce labor
  • premature birth
  • stillbirth
Q3

What is the baby-broker connection to Lynn?

The investigation reveals that Lynn Mallory works with a baby-broker, a criminal who buys and sells newborns. The scheme involved Lynn identifying pregnant women, inducing early labor, and delivering the babies to the broker for sale. Madeline was targeted as part of this operation.

  • baby broker
  • black market baby
  • infant trafficking
  • lynn mallory
Q4

Why was Madeline's body cremated so quickly?

The quick cremation was part of the cover-up. Lynn and her associates arranged for Madeline's remains to be cremated before Jenna could question the circumstances or request an independent autopsy. This removed evidence of the baby's true condition and prevented further investigation into the theft.

  • cremation
  • cover up
  • evidence
  • remains
Q5

Why did police suspect Jenna of murdering her own baby?

The detective theorized that Jenna deliberately took the labor-inducing vitamins to cause a stillbirth and protect her career. As a successful professional about to go on maternity leave, investigators believed she had motivation to eliminate the baby rather than derail her career advancement. This accusation added to Jenna's distress as she fought to prove her innocence.

  • jenna suspect
  • police investigation
  • career motive
  • murder charge
Q6

What really happened to Madeline after birth?

The truth is deliberately left ambiguous in the summary. Either Madeline was stolen immediately after birth and replaced with a stillborn, or she was delivered alive and taken by Lynn. The investigation points to a baby-broker operation, suggesting the baby may have been sold rather than killed, though the exact fate of Madeline is part of the mystery Jenna and Tom pursue.

  • madeline
  • baby missing
  • stolen baby

Q7

Why does Tom Robbins become part of Jenna's investigation?

Tom Robbins is revealed to be the father of Jenna's baby. He had no knowledge of the pregnancy before waking up beside Jenna in the hospital. Their shared grief and unanswered questions about Madeline's death draws them back together, and they jointly investigate the conspiracy as they rebuild their romantic relationship.

Foreshadowing: Earlier, Tom appears as a stranger in the hospital who reveals he is the father.

  • tom robbins
  • father
  • romance
  • investigation partnership
Q8

What is Lynn Mallory's motive in the plot?

Lynn's motive is financial profit through baby trafficking. She posed as a nurse to identify vulnerable pregnant women, used drugs to induce premature labor, and then either stole live babies or falsified stillbirths to deliver infants to the baby-broker. Her pleasant demeanor was a disguise to gain trust and access to her targets.

  • lynn motive
  • money
  • trafficking
  • profit
Q9

Does Jenna really risk her career by having a baby?

The movie suggests Jenna's career success creates vulnerability. As a single mother preparing for maternity leave, she faced potential professional setbacks. The detective's theory was that someone, possibly Jenna herself, wanted to eliminate this perceived threat to her career, though the deeper conspiracy with Lynn and the baby-broker eventually becomes the focus.

  • jenna career
  • professional woman
  • maternity leave
  • ambition
Q10

Do Jenna and Tom find out what happened to Madeline?

Jenna and Tom expose the connection between Lynn Mallory and the baby-broker, revealing the larger criminal network behind Madeline's disappearance. While the summary indicates they bring clarity to the case, the resolution is mixed, the trauma of losing her baby and being accused of murder leaves lasting emotional scars, even as their relationship strengthens.
