The film opens with Jennifer Hill driving to a shop to collect the keys to her rented cabin. Her intention is to spend a few months in the secluded woods, focusing on her writing, away from city life.

As Jennifer navigates her way to the cabin, she becomes lost and stops at a gas station. There, she encounters a rowdy group of locals who react violently when she accidentally spills liquid on their leader, Johnny.

After some initial hiccups, Jennifer reaches her cabin and experiences a sense of peace. However, strange noises at night begin to heighten her anxiety, suggesting something sinister is lurking nearby.

One day, Matthew, a handyman, arrives to fix a broken toilet. Their brief interaction escalates with an innocent kiss, but Matthew soon retreats, sharing thoughts about Jennifer with his friends who harbor resentment towards her.
