In the scorching deserts of North West Australia, two highway patrol officers, Gary Bulmer and Brian O’Connor, find themselves in a race against time as they strive to meet their speeding ticket quotas. Their mundane task takes a sinister turn when they encounter Mick Taylor, a seemingly laid-back driver who becomes their target under the pretense of speeding. The encounter quickly escalates; Mick is subjected to a vicious verbal onslaught and is ultimately handed a speeding ticket, along with an ultimatum to dispose of his truck. Anger boiling over, Mick takes a brutal revenge when an unfortunate series of events leads to O’Connor lying lifeless in a gully, struck down by a stray bullet. As his companion’s desperate pleas echo in vain, Mick ruthlessly snaps Bulmer’s leg and plunges a Bowie knife into his back, leaving him in the fiery embrace of an inferno fueled by ignited petrol.

Meanwhile, a young German couple, Rutger and Katarina, has set off on a hitchhiking adventure from Sydney, ultimately camping near the Wolf Creek Crater. Their night of adventure takes a horrific turn when Mick arrives at their campsite, offering to drive them to a nearby caravan park to avoid penalties for camping illegally. His offer rejected, Mick’s demeanor darkens, leading to a brutal attack where he stabs Rutger in a calculated ambush. As Katarina screams in horror, Mick ties her up and attempts to perpetrate a heinous act; however, a wounded Rutger fights back valiantly, only to meet a gruesome end at the hands of Mick’s knife. With Rutger silenced, Mick unveils his horrific plans to Katarina, promising a nightmarish captivity before rendering her unconscious.

As the relentless night drags on, Katarina wakes in sheer panic to discover Mick dismembering Rutger’s body to feed his ravenous dogs. In a frantic race for survival, she escapes into the merciless wilderness, prompting Mick to pursue her like a predator in a grotesque game of hide and seek. Meanwhile, English tourist Paul Hammersmith drives along and picks up the distraught Katarina, unaware that his good deed will plunge him into a living hell; Mick soon appears, riddling their vehicle with bullets and tragically killing Katarina in the fray. Overcome with guilt, Paul reluctantly leaves her lifeless body by the roadside, covering it with a sleeping bag before he departs at dawn.

As fate would have it, Paul’s vehicle troubles lead to a fateful encounter with Mick, who takes control of the wheel after gruesomely disposing of the original driver. A terrifying chase ensues, marked by chaos as Mick runs down kangaroos on the highway, culminating in a cataclysmic crash that leaves Paul miraculously escaping the wreckage. However, the disaster marks only the beginning of his torment.

Exhausted and dehydrated, Paul embarks on a treacherous trek across the unforgiving outback. Just when it seems he is out of options, he finds a humble homestead where an elderly couple welcomes him with open arms. Tragically, their kindness is short-lived, as Mick arrives to unleash carnage on the unsuspecting duo, leaving Paul to narrowly escape the bloody scene. Yet, salvation remains elusive as Mick catches up to him, dragging him back into captivity.

Imprisoned in Mick’s Dungeon, Paul finds himself zip-tied and playing a twisted game dictated by his sadistic captor, who holds him responsible for Katarina’s death. Mick introduces a macabre quiz on Australian culture, creating a high-stakes atmosphere where each wrong answer results in gruesome repercussions. Paul’s quick wit initially entertains Mick, but as he falters, he faces a horrific fate: Mick uses a grinder to mutilate one of Paul’s fingers as punishment. With each question, Paul desperately tries to recall his knowledge of Australian history, striving to survive and discern a means of escape.

At a critical moment, Paul deliberately answers incorrectly, prompting Mick to free his other hand, leading to a violent struggle. Seizing an opportunity with a nearby hammer, Paul strikes back before taking off through the maze-like labyrinth of Mick’s lair, every corner revealing horrifying discoveries. His path is fraught with danger, leading him to a trap that nearly claims him. Just as he thinks he has outsmarted Mick, the encounter with an emaciated female captive turns deadly, but her swift demise only attracts Mick’s fury, leaving Paul battered and overwhelmed.

Eventually, Paul awakens in a disoriented state, dressed only in his undergarments on a rural path. The mocking note nearby with the words “LOSER” serves as a chilling reminder of his ordeal. As police officers finally discover him, a haunting series of title cards reveal the grim aftermath of Paul’s experience. His cries for help to the authorities are dismissed, entangling him in a web of suspicion surrounding the Wolf Creek murders, leading him to a harrowing mental collapse and deportation back to the UK. The film draws to an unsettling close, as Mick vanishes into the vast Australian outback, rifle in hand, leaving the audience grappling with the chilling implications of justice gone awry and the perpetuating cycle of terror.
