I Am Frankelda

Herneval's apparent betrayal is a deliberate part of Frankelda's trap for Procustes. By acting as though he has switched sides, Herneval gets close enough to swap Procustes's script on the Harpspider with a story Frankelda wrote herself. This forces Procustes to enter a narrative Frankelda can shape completely, turning his own strategy of invasion against him.

Earlier in I Am Frankelda, Herneval is shown rehearsing performances with the Harpspider, hinting that his role as an actor could be weaponized.

Mythelitas, one of the soldiers still under Procustes's spell, fatally stabs Herneval before the prince can steady Frankelda during the trap. As his physical body dies, Herneval moves his soul into Frankelda's book through a final kiss, and later reappears inside the mindscape as the child tied to Francisca's earliest memory. He continues existing as a story rather than a body.
