His arrogance stemmed from having successfully hunted unicorns for so long. He believed he could contain any situation, not realizing that his own hubris would be his undoing. The unicorn's presence was exactly what he wanted, as it would give him the final unicorn he needed to complete his collection.

Mabruk explicitly warns Haggard that allowing Amalthea into his court would bring doom, but Haggard dismisses this as arrogance from a rival wizard.

The unicorn fell in love with Prince Lír because her transformation into a human woman gave her access to human emotions for the first time. This magical guide represented the ancient knowledge of the natural world, pointing the last unicorn toward her destiny. The butterfly's presence established early on that the unicorn was not alone and that there were forces working to help her succeed in her quest.

Celaeno, the immortal harpy, chose to stay at the Midnight Carnival even after being freed because she had been imprisoned there for so long that she had become dependent on the attention it brought her. Mommy Fortuna kept Celaeno imprisoned specifically because the harpy's presence attracted visitors and legitimized the carnival as a place of mythical wonders. While the unicorn freed her from physical chains, Celaeno's psychological attachment to her role as the carnival's star attraction kept her from joining the quest. This choice highlights the theme of captivity being as much about the prisoner's mindset as about actual imprisonment.
