Reverend Drew Devlin [Chris Evans] and the church’s inner circle set a tense, unsettling mood as the film unfolds in a small California town. In Bakersfield, a late-night car crash pulls the camera toward Mia Novotny, whose fateful night is interrupted when a mysterious figure, Cher [Lera Abova], arrives, seizes a ring bearing a cross from Mia’s finger, and slips away to the lake where she goes skinny-dipping before riding off on a motorcycle as soon as the police arrive. Private Investigator Honey O’Donahue [Margaret Qualley] arrives at the wreck with a wary eye and a ready attitude, meeting with Detective Marty Metakawich [Charlie Day], who immediately smells trouble and flirts despite Honey’s guarded, businesslike vibe. Honey recognizes Mia but withholds the truth, claiming Mia wasn’t a client, while Marty’s persistence—paired with a few unwanted advances—helps push the investigation forward in unpredictable directions. Honey heads back to her office, where her assistant Spider [Gabby Beans] introduces a new client, Mr. Siegfried [Billy Eichner], who believes his boyfriend is cheating and asks Honey to uncover the truth.

The narrative widens as Honey visits her sister Heidi O’Donahue [Kristen Connolly], a single mother juggling multiple kids, including Corinne [Talia Ryder], a rebellious teen who is just beginning to push back against the world around her. Corinne’s transition becomes personal when her boyfriend Mickie [Alexander Carstoiu] picks her up after a rough shift at work. The story threads deeper into the town’s rituals when we enter the Four-Way Temple Church, where Reverend Drew Devlin [Chris Evans] is found in a compromising scene with a church member, while his right-hand man Shuggie [Josh Pafchek] delivers troubling news: one of their drivers, Little Joey, has overdosed. In a later, stark confrontation, Cher [Lera Abova] serves as the liaison to French drug traffickers, telling Drew that the French are unhappy with how Mia’s case is being handled, though Drew consistently denies involvement.

Honey’s investigative drive leads her to Mia’s home and into a conversation with MG Falcone [Aubrey Plaza], a police officer with her own bruised past and a clear attraction to Honey. Honey also talks with Mia’s mother [Kinna McInroe], who paints a picture of Mia as seemingly ordinary, even as Honey discovers an S&M outfit tucked away in Mia’s room that hints at a more complex life hidden from the family. The trail then spirals into a bar, where Colligan [Christian Antidormi] is approached by Hector [Jacnier], a dealer with a demand-for-credit dynamic that spirals into danger. Colligan can’t pay for his drugs, offering to perform a sexual favor in place of payment, but Hector rejects him and Colligan flees—only to be struck by fate when the bartender witnesses the moment and another dark turn unfolds.

Drew learns of Hector’s connection to the church’s drug ecosystem and dispatches Shuggie to handle the situation. What follows is a horrific chain of violence: Hector and Shuggie clash, Shuggie fires first after a stab in the throat with a fork, and the two escalate into a brutal melee that ends with an iron, a murder, and Hector fleeing to the church. There, Drew confronts Hector amid a scene of disarray, attempting to shoot him as he bursts into the room—Drew’s self-assured façade finally crumbles when his assailant misses, and Drew kills Hector in front of stunned guests.

The aftermath ripples through the town and through Honey’s personal life as Mr. Siegfried returns with fresh heartbreak, and Honey crosses paths with MG again at a bar, where the two share a moment that deepens their complicated bond. Honey’s investigation thickens when Corinne returns home with a black eye from Mickie, forcing Honey to step in and search Mickie’s trailer. The confrontation reveals nothing conclusive about Corinne’s disappearance, but it does unmask the fragility of the family ties that hold the sisters together. A knock on Honey’s door brings an unwelcome surprise: the old man who raised Honey and Heidi, their estranged father, arrives with guilt-ridden theatrics aimed to elicit sympathy, only to be met with unshakable resolve.

As Honey continues her hunt for Corinne, she receives a call from Marty confirming that Mia was stabbed before the car crash, shifting the focus back to the church and its dark network. A decisive confrontation unfolds at the Four-Way Temple, where Drew is finishing an encounter with Chere, who executes him after stating the French are not pleased. The shot echoes through the temple as Honey hears the gunfire and watches Chere ride away on her motorcycle, a stark reminder of how far power and desire can pull people into deadly cycles.

The trail leads Honey to MG’s home, where a lipstick-smudge on a teacup matching Corinne’s shade reveals a chilling truth: MG has kidnapped Corinne and has already killed her father, Mia, and other vulnerable women tied to the temple, all seen as worthless victims in MG’s world. Honey intervenes, shooting MG three times, only to collapse from a stab wound herself. The aftermath brings Heidi back into Corinne’s orbit and reunites the family in the wake of tragedy, while Marty, ever persistent, uses his charm once more as he and Honey discuss the case.

In the hospital, Honey awakens to a quiet reconciliation between sisters, and the case feels closer to resolution. Heidi helps Corinne rebuild, while Marty’s lingering flirtations add a bittersweet texture to the moment. In a final, quietly hopeful turn, Honey spots Chere again on her motorcycle and, with a streak of danger still in the air, considers joining her on a new road—one that might lead to answers, or perhaps into the unknown.
