Maggie finds herself as the last remaining cow on the Dixon Ranch after the notorious cattle rustler, Alamida Slim, executes a daring heist that leaves Mr. Dixon without his herd. In a bid to start anew, Mr. Dixon sells Maggie to Pearl, a warm-hearted elderly woman who runs a quaint little farm known as Patch of Heaven, situated close to a railroad track.

Upon her arrival, Maggie quickly captures the attention of the local animals by dazzling them with her remarkable sleight of hand tricks using her tail. However, their newfound serenity is disrupted when the local Sheriff arrives with urgent news: Pearl’s bank is tightening its grip on debtors. If she fails to pay back $750 within three days, her beloved farm is at risk of being sold to the highest bidder. Realizing the gravity of the situation, Maggie rallies her fellow farm inhabitants—Grace (a cheerful and carefree cow) and Mrs. Calloway (a cow who has let her newfound leadership go to her head)—to venture into town and aim for prize money at the upcoming fair.

As the adventure unfolds, we discover Buck, the Sheriff’s horse, daydreaming about participating in real law-enforcement escapades. In town, a bounty hunter named Rico, whom Buck idolizes, delivers a criminal to collect a reward. In need of a replacement horse to pursue Alamida Slim, Rico takes Buck with him. When Maggie learns that the bounty for capturing Slim is precisely $750—just the sum Pearl requires—she persuades her bovine companions to embark on a mission to capture the elusive rustler and save Patch of Heaven.

On their journey, the off-key singing by Grace annoyingly tests the patience of Maggie and Mrs. Calloway, particularly because Grace believes she has impeccable pitch. They also pass the now-sold Dixon Ranch, where Maggie reveals her past and how her life was spared during the theft, as she had been locked in the barn after winning a fair’s first prize.

That night, the trio hides among a herd of steers. Just as they try to forge a plan, Alamida Slim appears, luring the cattle into a trance with his unexpected yodeling that sends them dancing to his will. Fortunately, Grace manages to snap Maggie and Mrs. Calloway back to reality just in time to avoid being trapped by Slim, who uses a rockslide to thwart Rico and his posse.

Following Slim’s antics, Buck returns to Maggie, Grace, and Mrs. Calloway after engaging in lively conversation with them. However, this friendly chat leads Rico to mistakenly believe Buck is afraid of cows and sends him back to the Sheriff. Determined to redeem himself and capture Slim, Buck sets out on his own, while Maggie and her friends give chase, only to find themselves in a downpour that erases their trail. Internal conflicts arise as Mrs. Calloway accuses Maggie of pursuing Slim for selfish reasons, creating tension among the group as they shelter under a rock that night.

The following morning, a peg-legged rabbit named Lucky Jack, who lost his leg due to a Rabbit’s foot amulet, rejoins their quest. Jack reveals that Alamida Slim had also wronged him, stealing his old mine, which he now uses as his hideout. The cows enlist Jack to lead them to this hiding place.

Inside the mine, Slim shares his backstory, explaining that although he was once a skilled cowboy, he faced constant rejection from his patrons, forcing him into a life of cattle rustling for vengeance. Meanwhile, Slim’s accomplices unveil his duplicitous persona as Mr. O’delay, the respectable figure quietly purchasing the very ranches he robbed. Discovering a new target labeled “Patch of Heaven,” Slim sets his sights on their farm next.

As the cows plot to capture Slim, they find themselves blocked from entering the mine by Slim’s buffalo steed, but they manage to gain entry. Plans unfold to cut Jack’s cotton tail to create earplugs as they prepare for confrontation. In a chaotic turn, Slim discovers three cows are missing from his initial count and embarks on a frantic hunt for Maggie and the others.

The scene leads to an uproar as Grace accidentally collides with Slim using a mine cart, while Jack takes matters into his own hands by striking Slim with a prospecting pan. They narrowly escape the clutches of Slim and his henchmen, all aboard a steam train.

Buck, feeling slighted by Rico when his grand plans go awry, tricks Rico’s horse into fleeing. However, as chaos erupts in the mine, Rico endures a revelation as he takes Buck back to the scene of turmoil. When their western showdown leads to both factions colliding, Rico’s true allegiance to Slim is exposed.

Stranded in the desert while Slim dons his O’delay guise and heads to the auction, the cows refuse to give up hope. Harnessing their newfound courage, they escape the train and rally the other farm animals in a revolt against Slim’s oppressive regime. Together, they pursue justice and fight for the survival of Patch of Heaven.
