In 1882, within the American Old West, an elderly prairie dog named Virgil Stephen Stanton narrates a tale from the edge of a dusty town. He is perturbed by Clem [Fred Tatasciore], a slovenly and obese man who openly hates prairie dogs and tries to harass the spotted one, yet his efforts fail again and again. One thwarted assault ends with Clem being kicked by a horse, flung onto a cactus, and later, when he falls into a hole, the prairie dogs raid him, cart off his belongings, and throw a jubilant party in their own bustling town.
Cut to a sweeping view of a ranch. Longhorn cattle graze peacefully until a red bird malforms the calm by damaging the corral fence, releasing the herd. Jerry [William Hanna] Mouse, along with his nephews, [Kath Soucie] as Tuffy, [Georgie Kidder] as Scruffy, and [Kari Wahlgren] as Duffy, are snuggled inside leather knife scabbards lined with wool, ready for whatever adventure the day holds. Jerry wakes first and notices a cow’s eye peeking through the mousehole; he seals the eye, slips outside, and uses his own mount as a bulldozer to round the cattle back to their corral. At the same moment, Bumpy [Sean Burgos] and a grayish she-cat stroll by. When the old man complains about the cracked fences, Jerry yelps in fear and bolts, only to be grabbed by the she-cat. Yet what starts as a scuffle quickly blossoms into a playful moment as Jerry and the cat share a lighthearted cuddle.
The household returns to the breakfast table, where Betty [Kaitlyn Robrock], the ranch’s owner, prepares meals for the family and animals. The nephews’ appetites are enormous, and they even manage to slip into Betty’s coffee mug. Despite the chaos, no one minds the mice’s voracious hunger. Betty waits for her brother Bentley [Justin Michael] to join the gathering, while August Critchley [Chris Edgerly] organizes his plans to expand his dominion over the region. Clem remains Critchley’s loyal henchman, orchestrating a scheme to undermine the Double B Ranch by digging tunnels beneath its grounds. Prairie dogs will burrow unseen, while scarecrows are placed around the tunnels to frighten the residents and lure them toward Critchley’s own ranch, driving down the value of Betty’s property.
Bentley arrives on a horse cart accompanied by his cat Tom [William Hanna], who looks bored by the journey. Bumpy admires Bentley’s sharp appearance, yet Tom’s attention instantly shifts when he spots the ranch’s resident she-cat. He falls for her, though she remains distant. Bentley shares stories from his railroad job in the big city, then returns to the family site for a respite. Suddenly, Tuffy, Scruffy, Duffy, and Jerry burst from their holes and topple Tom. Tom gives chase to the mice, while the cat guarding him clings to Tom’s tail. Bentley witnesses the mice and realizes he has a deep fear of them.
Tom makes another attempt to capture the clever mice, but he becomes entangled in a bull pen, and a bull gives chase. In a surprising turn, Jerry saves Tom, and the unlikely duo—once adversaries—form a budding alliance. Tom promises to help repair the ranch, and the unlikely pair begin to work together to outsmart Critchley and Clem.
The climax resolves as Tom and the mice thwart Critchley’s schemes, and the ranch is finally secured. The family uncovers gold and begins to rebuild the Double B Ranch, turning its fortunes around. In a heartwarming coda, Jerry chooses to live among the prairie dogs, and he and a resident prairie dog wave as a train carries Tom, Scruffy, Tuffy, Bentley, and Duffy, all bearing their newfound wealth, toward a brighter future.
