Bill Barnacle presides over a bleak voyage in the South Pole, joined by his loyal first mate Sam Sawnoff and the ship’s crewman Buncle. When Bill intervenes to stop Buncle from harming Sam, a catastrophe strikes: an iceberg cracks open and out pops an unlikely, immortal guest, Albert the Magic Pudding. Albert is rude, boastful, and insistent that they keep eating him, a demand that sows immediate tension among the trio. In a chaotic moment, Buncle swipes the pudding and escapes, only to plunge into the sea as the ice splits once more. Bill and Sam manage to recover the pudding and, after a moment of mourning for their presumed loss, resolve to guard it against any thief who would crave its endless supply.

A decade passes, and a young koala named Bunyip Bluegum discovers that he is not an orphan after all and sets off to find his real parents, Meg Bluegum and Tom Bluegum. The seasoned duo agrees to help when the pudding’s would-be thieves reappear, attempting to seize Albert once more. Albert, ever keen for a chase, darts off and challenges anyone to catch him, leaving the others to pursue him. An unlikely guide appears in the form of a watermelon-bearing bandicoot, who initially dodges the question before revealing that the only one fearless enough to provide the answer is the enigmatic frog on the log, a creature who seems to hold a crucial clue for the boy’s quest. The frog on the log is brought to the story as the group presses on, with the frog offering a riddle that directs them toward the place where the Bluegum family’s past may lie.

As the pursuit unfolds, Buncle is revealed to be alive, living underground with a group of slaves, including Meg and Tom Bluegum, who secretly subsist and feed him as he waits for Albert to be brought back into play by the thieves, his nephew Watkin and the possum ally. After thwarting another pudding-heist attempt, Bunyip slips and falls into a creek, where he dreams of his missing parents and then meets the frog on the log who directs him toward the riddle’s answer. The thieves finally succeed in stealing Albert by creating a distraction with a dangerous fire, but the pudding owners locate their home and Bunyip lures the thieves outside, allowing a daring escape with Albert in tow.

The riddle is finally solved in a moment of instinctual fury: two gum trees overlook a valley fed by a dam, the town of Tiralu lying downstream. The pudding owners race toward the town as the pudding thieves unleash a flood by opening the dam. Water rushes through the valley, threatening to wash away everything. Bunyip, with the help of Albert, funnels the chaos into a makeshift dam, saving the town and earning the gratitude of its residents. The townspeople escort the group to Buncle’s underground lair, where no one has ever emerged. On the verge of giving up, Bunyip is pulled further into the adventure as Albert slides down into the cavern in his bowl, followed by Bunyip, Bill, and Sam.

Inside, Buncle’s tirade against the thieves is interrupted when Albert tumbles into his lap. The schemer’s plan to seize the pudding is thwarted as the thieves are sent to join the slaves in a reversal of power, and a celebration erupts at the capture of the pudding. The pudding owners arrive to reclaim Albert, but a clever ruse by Sam, who dresses as a woman to distract Buncle, gives Bunyip and Bill enough time to free the enslaved people. The moment of truth comes when one of the freed slaves is revealed to be Meg and Tom, reuniting the Bluegum family at last.

With the family restored, the pudding owners demand Albert for a double serving, hoping to outmaneuver Buncle. Albert’s halves contend within him, but Buncle’s appetite for control backfires as he demands a million servings, causing Albert to grow uncontrollably until he escapes into space, scattering into billions of puddings before finally returning to his bowl and Earth. Believing him dead, Bill and Sam mourn, yet Sam’s tears revive Albert, bringing everyone back to a joyous reunion.

The celebration doesn’t end there. Bill, Sam, and Albert continue to live peacefully with the Bluegums, while Rumpus Bumpus and the wandering Wattlebury remain a looming threat as the pudding thieves circle again, only to be repelled by the capable guardianship of the pudding’s owners. Back at the pole, Buncle is sent home, only to find himself stranded on a drifting ice block in the southern sea, a final image of defeat as the block drifts away.

In the end, a tale of loyalty, family, and a wildly magical dessert closes with the memory of an impossible journey that brought a koala boy to his parents and turned a perilous quest into a community triumph. The world of Tiralu remains a symbol of hope and resilience, where artful cunning, steadfast friendship, and a little bit of whimsy prove that even the most outlandish legends can help families find their way home.
