Stanley Yelnats IV is wrongfully accused of stealing a pair of baseball shoes that were donated by the acclaimed player Clyde 'Sweet Feet' Livingston. As a result of this accusation, he is sent to a juvenile work camp known as Camp Green Lake.

Upon arriving at Camp Green Lake, Stanley discovers that it is not a camp in the traditional sense but a desolate, dried-up lake ruled by the corrupt Warden Walker and her henchmen. The boys are subjected to the harsh punishment of digging holes under the scorching sun.

Stanley gradually earns his place among the boys and is given the nickname 'Caveman.' He forms a close friendship with Zero, a quiet boy who struggles with literacy, and begins teaching him how to read, illustrating the power of friendship in adversity.
