Stanley Yelnats IV, portrayed by Shia LaBeouf, is a kind-hearted teenager grappling with the weight of a family curse that has plagued the Yelnats lineage for generations. This misfortune traces back to his ancestor, Stanley Yelnats I, whose treasure was stolen by the notorious outlaw, “Kissin’ Kate” Barlow. The family believes that the curse originates from their Latvian ancestor, Elya Yelnats, who failed to fulfill a promise to carry Madame Zeroni, played by Eartha Kitt, up a mountain.

Wrongly accused of stealing a pair of baseball shoes donated by the celebrated player Clyde “Sweet feet” Livingston (Rick Fox), Stanley finds himself sent to Camp Green Lake, a juvenile work camp with a dark agenda. Upon arrival, he discovers that the “camp” is actually a desolate dried-up lake managed by the unscrupulous Warden Walker, embodied by Sigourney Weaver, alongside her assistant Mr. Sir, who is portrayed by Jon Voight, and camp counselor Dr. Pendanski, played by Tim Blake Nelson. Each day, the boys are forced to dig holes five feet deep and five feet wide, under the punishing sun, with threats from deadly rattlesnakes and yellow-spotted lizards lurking nearby.

Though initially an outsider, Stanley gradually earns his place in the group and adopts the nickname “Caveman.” He forms a special bond with a quiet boy named Zero, whose real name is Hector Zeroni, and starts teaching him to read. Flashbacks reveal the origins of the Yelnats’ bad luck, beginning with Elya Yelnats in Latvia. He was madly in love with the beautiful Myra, but after consulting Madame Zeroni, he was advised to take a pig to America to prove his worth. In his haste, Elya fails to keep his promise to Madame Zeroni, leading to the family’s eternal curse.

The tale of Camp Green Lake unfolds as viewers learn about its history. Once a bustling town filled with life around a beautiful lake, it fell into despair following a tragic love story involving Miss Katherine, the local schoolteacher, and Sam, an onion seller. After their romance ignites violence among the townsfolk, tragedy strikes when Sam is murdered, which eventually leads to Miss Katherine becoming the infamous outlaw, “Kissin’ Kate.”

As the story progresses, Stanley discovers a tube of lipstick linked to Kissin’ Kate Barlow, a relic from the past, but does the right thing by giving it to X-Ray, a fellow inmate, as X-Ray had not had a day off in months. Tension escalates when Hector retaliates after being insulted and runs away, prompting Stanley to assist him. Their journey leads them to the mountain called God’s Thumb, where they find sustenance and water.

In a pivotal moment, Stanley unknowingly breaks the ancient curse by carrying Zero to the top of the mountain and fulfilling a promise made long ago by Elya Yelnats. Meanwhile, Stanley learns that Zero was the one responsible for his wrongful incarceration, having taken the shoes not knowing their significance.

In a flashback, an older Kate Barlow is hunted down by bounty hunters seeking her legendary treasure, but she defiantly allows herself to be bitten by a yellow-spotted lizard, solidifying her fate. The narrative intertwines as Stanley and Zero’s luck changes, leading them to uncover a hidden treasure chest which puts them back at the mercy of the corrupt Warden and Mr. Sir.

However, Stanley’s courage shines when he confronts the Warden, and a series of unwinding secrets leads to the downfall of the camp’s authority figures. When rain finally pours down on the long-parched Camp Green Lake, it’s a symbolic end to the curse they’ve faced.

As the story concludes, the Yelnats family claims the treasure, ensuring a brighter future for both Stanley and Hector, who use their newfound fortune to reunite with family. Ultimately, the camp is repurposed into a girl scout camp, sealing the fate of the cursed land, while the legacy of “sploosh,” an odor-eliminating mixture, becomes a triumph for the family, showcased through Clyde “Sweet feet” Livingston’s commercial, reminding them of the journey they’ve endured.
