Along US Highway 13 near Bishop, California, the Norris Trucking Company is besieged by a string of mysterious truck accidents. The heiress to the company, Henrietta Denton, meets a fatal end on the same stretch, setting off alarms and stirring concerns about the safety of the fleet. Hank Wilson, a seasoned truck driver for Norris, pulls over to lend a hand when trouble strikes again, a gesture that pulls him deeper into the company’s murky troubles.

Her husband, Frank Denton, goes straight to the company’s owner, J.E. Norris, voicing serious worries about how the crashes are being investigated. He even suggests bringing in his war buddy to take a closer look, signaling that there could be more at stake than bad luck or mere coincidence. Meanwhile, Hank crosses paths with Doris Lacy, who works at the Clover Cafe and Garage during one of his routes. She nudges him about life plans, asking when he’ll ask for a raise that would finally put him on track to own his own truck, a goal he has been delaying.

Mary Hadley, the personnel supervisor, remains skeptical that Hank deserves a raise, adding a human wrinkle to the company’s tension. Frank Denton later asks Hank if he noticed anything unusual when he found his wife after the latest accident, and Hank admits that nothing concrete has appeared yet, though the pattern feels more than random. He does admit the situation is growing harder to dismiss as mere “jinx,” especially with each incident occurring in the same area. Frank, perhaps sensing leverage, offers the raise anyway.

With the sixth accident looming, the company hires an investigator, George Montgomery, to go undercover as one of Norris’s truck drivers and shadow Hank. On a stop at a diner, Hank fills Doris Lacy in on the raise and the hope to set a date, while George uncovers a hint of a larger scheme. He reports that the Clover Cafe’s owner, Pops, has a past—he once ran with a gang in the 1920s—and that the motive behind the accidents could involve inside involvement.

Before returning to the warehouse, Hank drops a life moment on Doris by proposing, and she accepts. At the facility, as Hank passes by, a hand frees the brake on his truck, sending it rolling back into the path of George Montgomery and killing him, a calculated act that shifts the investigation from coincidence to foul play. Hank is taken in on suspicion of homicide, and an attorney for the insurance agency, Keller, drops by to lay out a grim deal: Hank could be reinstated if he helps prove the crashes were deliberate and unmask the motive, though the truth is to be kept quiet, especially to Doris.

Hank and Keller press forward, and Hank becomes entangled in a delicate web of insinuations. He visits Mary Hadley in her office, where a moment of tension hints at deeper motives, and then reconnects with Doris to explain the shifting approach. Doris, wary of rumors about an affair, struggles to interpret Hank’s loyalties and reasons, ultimately ending their engagement.

As their method evolves, Hank and Keller begin to close in on Pops. Doris informs Pops that Hank has placed him “pinned to the wall and Labeled,” a revelation that leads to a tense confrontation. Pops ambushes Hank, binds him, and — with Aunt Myrt Lacy nearby — drives off in a truck, while Doris secretly follows, climbing into the back to stay hidden from sight.

Pops ultimately meets with Frank and Mary, and the plan is laid bare: Pops will drive to the crest of a hill, apply the throttling power, and jump out while Frank and Mary follow to pick him up. On the ascent, Mary expresses a touch of discomfort, but Frank insists the plan could work as long as the police never suspect Hank’s mind was broken by his wartime experiences. Mary hints that Keller would back their story to spare the company the insurance payment, and the trio advances with a dangerous confidence.

At the crest, Pops executes the move, and Doris, still hidden, fights to regain control of the truck while attempting to rouse Hank. A collision follows when Frank’s car strikes Pops, leaving him behind. Hank awakens and manages to halt the truck in the road’s center, but Frank and Mary—believing they’re in the clear—catch up, swerve, and tumble off an embankment.

In the aftermath, Hank is offered a reward, yet he remains unsettled by the deceit and manipulation that surrounded the case. Doris, ever pragmatic, asks whether there’s any chance of getting the red truck back in Bakersfield, a practical thread that hints at a life beyond the case, even as the immediate danger and deception begin to unravel around them.
