What Happens in Hero of Rome: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of Hero of Rome (1964) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

The city-state of Rome has just expelled its Etruscan overlords and become a republic. In response, the Etruscans declare war in an effort to reclaim their territory. The exiled king Tarquin, Massimo Serato, remains bent on continuing the conflict to regain his throne, and he orders his men to kill Mucius, Gordon Scott, later. The stage is set for a clash between a newly independent Rome and a resurgent old guard, a struggle that will test loyalty, courage, and the price of freedom.

Amid the early clashes, the warrior Scaevola is captured while attempting to assassinate king Porsenna, Roldano Lupi. He is threatened with torture unless he reveals Rome's plans. But Scaevola refuses to yield: he thrusts his right hand into a brazier and lets the flames burn, proving that his love for Rome outweighs personal pain, and warning the king that many Romans would do the same for their homeland. Porsenna, awed by this sacrifice, releases him and seeks peace after learning the truth about how Rome banished their last king, Lucius Tarquinius Superbus.

Surviving an ambush, Mucius, Gordon Scott, returns to Rome to rally his countrymen, though the damage to his hand prevents him from wielding a sword with his right hand again. The Roman Senate manages the war poorly, and it becomes clear that only Scaevola can lead his countrymen to victory. He trains himself to fight with his left hand, and is soon able to return to battle to confront the Etruscan kings.

Hero of Rome Plot Explained: Your Questions Answered

The questions people ask most about Hero of Rome (1964): what happens in the confusing scenes, why the characters do what they do, the twists, hidden details and what the ending means. Each answer contains spoilers.

Q1

Why did Scaevola burn his hand in the brazier?

Scaevola burned his hand to prove his loyalty to Rome and resist torture from King Porsenna. By thrusting his right hand into the brazier and enduring the pain without revealing Roman plans, he demonstrated that Romans were willing to sacrifice themselves for their city. This act of defiance also served as a warning that many Romans would do the same if threatened.

Foreshadowing: Earlier in the film, Rome had just expelled its Etruscan overlords, setting up the ideological conflict between Roman freedom and Etruscan rule.

Q2

Why did King Porsenna decide to seek peace with Rome?

Porsenna was moved by Scaevola's extraordinary sacrifice and his warning that many Romans would endure similar suffering for their homeland. After learning how Rome had banished King Tarquinius Superbus, Porsenna realized the Romans were united in their rejection of monarchy. Impressed by this display of devotion, he chose peace over further warfare.

Foreshadowing: The assassination attempt itself demonstrated Roman willingness to strike at Etruscan leadership, showing Porsenna the depth of Roman commitment.

Why did Tarquin continue the war after Porsenna sought peace?

Tarquin remained determined to restore his throne despite Porsenna's decision to sue for peace. As the exiled former king of Rome, Tarquin had lost his power and was bent on reclaiming it at any cost. He commissioned an ambush against Mucius to eliminate Roman resistance and pursued his own agenda separately from Porsenna's peace efforts.

Foreshadowing: The film establishes early that Tarquin is "bent on continuing the conflict to regain his throne," making his continued resistance predictable.

Q5

Why did the Roman Senate struggle in the war against the Etruscans?

The Roman Senate managed the war poorly, lacking effective military strategy and clear direction. This mismanagement hampered early Roman efforts and prolonged the conflict. The Senate's failure created the need for a capable military leader to emerge, which ultimately led to Scaevola taking command.

Foreshadowing: The timeline notes that "only Scaevola can lead his countrymen to victory," highlighting the Senate's inadequacy.

Q6

How did Scaevola train to fight with his left hand?

After his right hand was damaged preventing him from wielding a sword, Scaevola dedicated himself to mastering combat with his left hand. The timeline describes grueling training that gradually restored his fighting ability. Through determination and practice, he was able to return to battle and defeat the Etruscan kings.

Why did the Etruscans declare war on Rome?

Q8

What triggered Scaevola's return to battle?

Scaevola's return was triggered by his successful training to fight with his left hand, which restored his combat capability. Combined with the Roman Senate's poor management of the war, the need for a capable leader became desperate. Once his training was complete, he led Roman forces to a decisive victory over the Etruscan kings.

Even though his hand was damaged, he sought to contribute to the republic's defense rather than abandon the cause.
