In Ancient Rome, around 96 AD, Domitian has hardened into a paranoid and tyrannical ruler who keeps the populace in a constant state of fear. His inner circle is small and carefully chosen: his lover Artamne, a scheming Egyptian priestess of Isis; his diminutive jester Elpidion; a band of gladiator bodyguards under the command of a loyalist named Soterus; the palace guards; and the Imperial Praetorian Guard led by their stern centurion, while the world outside trembles at every rumor of treason. Anyone who dares speak against the emperor—whether they voice a minor complaint or are suspected of treason—faces imprisonment or execution, often without fair process.

[Valerius Rufus] is the Praetorian centurion who seems loyal on the surface, yet secretly resents the tyrant’s grip on power. He fights back against Domitian’s rule in a concealed, masked identity, earning the moniker “the Red Wolf” after he adopts a red wolf’s pelt to hide his face. Alongside him stand a few determined allies: the idealistic young senator Nerva and the seasoned patrician Fabius Lucillius, whose family becomes entwined with Valerius’ desperate bid to save the city’s more virtuous patrons. Most importantly, Fabius’ daughter Lucilla becomes Valerius’ love and a crucial figure in the fragile resistance that begins to coalesce around these fugitives.

Artamne’s machinations kick into high gear when she persuades Domitian to stage a sacrificial celebration inside the Imperial palace. The plan forces Lucilla and other patrician daughters to attend, exposing them to the emperor’s predatory indulgences. Valerius acts quickly to thwart the abuse, and in the process he hides his symbolic mask in a secret cache within the palace gardens. But the moment he places the mask there, Elpidion—a loyal dwarf who has long detested Domitian—spots him, and the plan to resist moves from a private confrontation into a full-scale conspiracy. The next day, Valerius helps Lucilla, the other girls, and the fugitives flee to Lucillius’ countryside estate, a temporary sanctuary that also becomes a seedbed for rebellion.

The tense pursuit forces the rebels to recalibrate their strategy. Elpidion, now wearing a wolf-pelt disguise, reveals that Domitian and Artamne are planning a purge, intending to arrest and execute all patricians suspected of treason. The Red Wolf steps forward to lead the defense, and in a pivotal moment he kidnaps Artamne as a hostage to buy time for the conspirators to regroup. Yet Artamne proves slippery, charming a guard and slipping back into the palace to betray the location of the rebel stronghold. Domitian answers with a brutal crackdown, sending Soterus and his gladiators to crush the resistance. Valerius and Elpidion fight bravely to shield the rebels, but the cost is high: Valerius sustains a wounded arm, Lucilla is captured, and the enemy seems to be closing in.

Valerius’ cover temporarily holds when he hides the injury by shifting the disguise of a fallen ally, but the secret is soon exposed by Soterus. A daring escape becomes the next stage in the struggle, and Valerius must confront the grim reality that his own people may pay the ultimate price for resisting tyranny. He ventures deeper into danger, while Sejanus—a loyal friend and ally within the guard—confides that the Praetorian Guards themselves share a growing resentment of Domitian’s rule and are eager to undermine him. With Sejanus’ help, Valerius and a motivated cadre of dissidents organize a new plan: to infiltrate the palace through its ancient, hidden corridors and seize the emperor in his own throne room.

In a daring nighttime operation led by Elpidion and bolstered by a coterie of traveling artists who oppose the tyrant, the rebels breach the palace’s defenses. They press forward through the dungeon routes and ambush Domitian’s retinue, catching the court off guard. In the melee, Artamne and Soterus are killed, and a clash with the guard’s ranks seems imminent. Yet the pivotal moment arrives when the rebels reach the throne room, and Valerius confronts Domitian directly. With Lucilla beside him, he defeats the tyrant in a climactic duel, ending Domitian’s brutality and bringing a fragile hope to a people who have endured fear for far too long.

The outcome reshapes the balance of power in the city. The fall of Domitian signals not only a personal triumph for Valerius but also a collective victory for the oppressed patricians and the loyal factions within the Praetorian Guard who yearned for reform. As the dust settles, the survivors must reckon with loss—the fallen Artamne and Soterus among them—and chart a path toward rebuilding in a world where tyranny has finally been challenged and pushed back. The tale closes on a note of cautious optimism: a Rome that has glimpsed a future where courage and unity might prevail over fear, with the Red Wolf’s legend continuing to echo through the empire as a reminder of what ordinary people can accomplish when they refuse to bow to oppression.
