Haunts

Ingrid, a young Swedish woman, lives with her American uncle Carl on his farm in rural Northern California. The town is shaken when a local girl is murdered with a pair of scissors by an unknown assailant, and the motive remains a mystery. The murder casts a pall over the community as Ingrid tries to settle into her new life.

Bill Spry becomes a new member of the church choir where Ingrid sings and begins showing an unsettling interest in her. She remains evasive, unsure how to handle his attention. This budding fixation marks a new threat for Ingrid and the town.

On her way home, Ingrid is attacked by a masked intruder but manages to escape. The incident triggers painful memories of her past, including her father's sexual molestation and her mother's subsequent suicide. She is physically unharmed but emotionally shaken.

Later that evening, Nell is attacked and murdered in her car after an angry exchange with Bill at a tavern. The town spirals with fear as investigators search for clues and motive remains unclear. The case adds to the growing sense that danger is closing in on Ingrid.

Frankie, the town butcher, breaks into the farm and assaults Ingrid; the attack turns into a rape. Carl arrives home in the middle of the assault, unaware of what is happening upstairs. Frankie threatens Ingrid and then leaves, leaving her shaken and afraid.

The next evening, Frankie goes to confess his transgression to the vicar. Ingrid leaves the church area, and Frankie attacks her again outside, but the assault is thwarted when the vicar hears her screams. The interruption buys Ingrid a narrow window of escape.

Ingrid is hospitalized after the assault and Sheriff Peterson visits to check on her. The vicar informs him that Loretta, his daughter, is carrying Frankie’s child, which escalates tensions in town. Peterson goes to Frankie’s house, handcuffs him to a pipe, and chastises Loretta for her situation.

Meanwhile, local police encounter a masked assailant attacking a woman on the street and give chase. Just before they arrest Frankie for the killings, Peterson receives a phone call that they have cornered the killer at the saw mill. The assailant is shot dead and unmasked as Bill.

That night Ingrid sees news footage announcing that Bill was the killer. The revelation unsettles her as the threat she feared is now publicly confirmed. The town processes the startling twist and shifts the focus of suspicion.

Frankie arrives at Ingrid's house, binds and gagges Carl, and Ingrid attacks him with a fire poke, stabbing him to death. Carl tries to dissuade Ingrid from contacting the police and helps bury Frankie. However, Ingrid still goes to the police station to explain what happened.

The next morning, Peterson and the deputies search the property; Carl has fled, and Ingrid is alone. They uncover Ingrid's goat buried in a shallow grave in the yard. Peterson goes upstairs to confront Ingrid and finds her dead in the bathroom, the result listed as suicide.

At Ingrid's funeral, Carl, now older, meets Peterson and the two depart together. Peterson explains that Ingrid's alleged attacks from Frankie were hallucinations, and the autopsy confirms she was a virgin. Carl returns to the farmhouse and finds steam filling the bathroom as Ingrid's apparition appears behind him in the vanity reflection.
