Rose Hood's husband, Scott Hood, the town marshal of Oracle, Texas, is killed by two assailants. Rose shoots one of the killers and is named the temporary marshal while the town awaits the arrival of the renowned Sam Bass to assume the role. The crisis leaves Rose stepping into leadership at a moment of danger for Oracle.

At the funeral for Scott Hood, Rose spots the second killer and shoots him. The act marks her vigil against the men who destroyed her family and seals her early resolve to protect Oracle. The town's grief is sharpened by violence already tied to its leadership.

That night, Rose asks Erica Page to close the saloon at 3 a.m., but Erica insists it remains open. They fight, and Erica eventually agrees to close for the night. Rose then learns that Erica has tasked her lackey Jake with hiring a gunslinger, leading to Cane Miro's entry into Oracle.

In the saloon, Mayor Polk warns Erica that her expansion along the proposed railroad track overextends her, but she dismisses his cautions. The exchange foreshadows the high-stakes political and economic interests behind the town's future. The warning heightens the tension between Erica and the town leadership.

As Cane rides toward Oracle, Rose shoots at him, mistaking him for Nate Signo, a man she has pursued. Realizing the mistake, she apologizes and the two of them ride together to locate Signo, whom Cane ultimately kills. This accidental brush with each other seeds a complicated alliance.

Cane enters the saloon and confronts Mayor Polk. Erica reveals that she has paid Cane to kill Rose, but hints that the railroad’s success might spare Rose from dying. The revelation sets in motion a dangerous betrayal within Oracle.

Erica purchases a freight line from Zebulon Taub for $15,000, while Jake tracks Taub. Rose and Cane share a moment and kiss, but Jake finds and kills Taub, reclaiming the money. The plot twist deepens the rivalry among the town's power players.

Erica grows jealous and irate as Cane continues to be close with Rose. She orders Jake to kill Rose, but Cane reminds her that they cannot break the deal they made. The tension moves toward a violent reckoning.

Cane reveals that Mayor Polk abandoned his troops during a pivotal battle, leaving Cane's four brothers to be captured or killed. Rose intervenes and has Polk placed in protective custody, hoping to prevent further harm. The backstory solidifies Cane's motive and Rose's protective instincts.

Three of Erica's banished dance-hall girls ambush Rose, attempting to hang her. Cane arrives in time to rescue Rose, and the would-be attackers flee town. The incident tightens the bond between Rose and Cane while widening the town's fractures.

Cane becomes intoxicated and kisses Erica; Jake spies but leaves before Erica's feelings are rejected by Cane. Erica orders Cane to kill Rose, escalating the feud. The moment marks a turning point toward the violent confrontation to come.

Jake seeks Rose and reveals what he knows about Erica's schemes. Later, in the saloon, Jake draws on Cane, but Cane kills him. Rose chooses not to arrest Cane, accepting Erica's claim that the murder was in self-defense.

Erica steals a letter informing the railroad will not be built and kills the messenger in the process, then rides into Oracle to set up Cane to kill Rose. Deputy Joshua Tate confronts them, and a violent clash erupts as Cane attacks Polk. Polk's wife dies shielding him.

Erica aims at Rose, but Cane shoots Erica, killing her. Rose pursues Cane out of Oracle and they exchange fire; Rose shoots Cane, who bleeds out after asking whether her feelings were reciprocated. Rose rides away from Oracle as Sam Bass arrives to ask if the town is quiet, which she confirms without looking back.
