In a tense confrontation inside a saloon, a knife fight erupts in a nearby corral, ending with Coe’s death but leaving Max badly wounded. Neesa carries him to her tribe’s camp, where he is healed by the people who cradle him between two families—the one he lost and the one he has found again. When Max finally recovers, the pursuit does not end; it intensifies. He learns that Bowdre is being kept deep within Louisiana’s swampy prison camps, and to reach him, he deliberately stages a bank robbery to land himself in the same place. Pilar [Suzanne Pleshette], a Cajun girl who works near the convicts, volunteers to help and lends Max the means to navigate the treacherous waterways of the marsh. The journey through the swamp is perilous and claustrophobic, the river’s reeds and hidden currents mirroring the murky moral terrain of Max’s mission. The boat ride keels on misfortune when a capsize forces the trio to contend with nature’s fury and a lethal snakebite that claims Pilar’s life even as Max defeats Bowdre. Having escaped the swamp, Max resumes the chase after Fitch, the last of the three that wronged him. He infiltrates Fitch’s gang under the alias Nevada Smith, knowing that his true aim is to confront the man who helped set the tragedy in motion. Fitch, wary of a new, dangerous recruit, weighs Max’s presence against the escalating greed of the gang as they ride out to a gold-transport heist. Cord, who has tracked Max’s path from the beginning, recognizes him and calls his name, but Max chooses to ignore the call as the gang’s greed overtakes its loyalty. From a vantage point on a hill, Max watches as the gang scrambles to seize the stolen gold, and Fitch, presuming surrender, attempts to bargain for his life.
