After the Civil War, Belle Shirley is reunited with her brother Ed Shirley and remains determined to press the fight for the South, a cause she holds close as she moves through a landscape torn by victory and vengeance. Ed extends an invitation to a tense dinner at their expansive estate, hoping to show hospitality while masking the simmering tensions of a postwar world. A horse thief who has crossed paths with Belle in the past surfaces, warning the army of unrest and forcing Sam Starr to depart under pressure, during which he is wounded. The loyal lieutenant, Blue Duck, carries him back to Belle, who, despite the danger, vows to shield him as the Major presses forward with his arresting power. The arrival of Major Grail compounds the peril, leading to a dramatic confrontation that not only arrests the rebel but also seizes Ed, and culminates in the savage burning of Belle’s house—an act that fuels Belle’s fury and solidifies her resolve.

Fuelled by rage and a sharpened sense of injustice, Belle commits herself to the rebel cause. She orchestrates a daring escape for the captain and her brother, who opts for the city rather than the frontier fight, while Belle joins Sam Starr’s growing insurgent force. Together they set out to reconquer Missouri, aiming to push northerners from their homeland and to redefine a landscape torn by war, with the bond of marriage sealing their commitment to the rebellion—even as they bear a price on their heads.

As the ranks swell, the Coole brothers—famed assassins—enter the fold, bringing a new, brutal energy to the campaign. The captain leads an expedition with them away from Belle, and when he remains absent, Belle’s brother returns with warnings about the expeditions’ ruthless impulses. The raids rob and kill, and Ed falls in the line of this brutal escalation, leaving Belle to grapple with grief and the moral cost of the war she has chosen to wage.

Believing she can protect him by stepping back, Belle learns from her husband that he has engaged in these violent acts, a revelation that drives a wedge between them. She offers to take him to Texas, seeking to spare him one final chance at peace, but he refuses, driven by a last mission to kidnap a governor. Their paths diverge in a heartbreaking moment: Belle returns his ring, choosing to flee rather than be torn apart by conflicting loyalties.

Her plan shifts toward exposing the trap laid for the captain, driven by a vow to protect him even as she contemplates surrender. A nurse’s warning confirms the danger, and Belle races to warn him, professing that her love will endure despite his misdeeds. But fate intervenes when a horse thief shoots her, stopping Belle in her tracks and changing the course of both their lives.
