Gulliver’s Travels Beyond the Moon

The homeless boy Ricky, known as Ted in the Japanese version, drifts through a night that begins with trouble and ends in a very unlikely adventure. After slipping into a screening about Lemuel Gulliver, he’s caught without a ticket and ushered back out into the cold streets. A mishap leaves him unconscious, only to awaken in a strange new world where a talking dog stands by his side and a discarded clockwork toy soldier named the Colonel is not far away. The dog, quick and wry, suggests they seek a small spark of joy at a nearby amusement park that’s closed for the night, turning a setback into a chance for mischief and companionship.

What follows is a blend of thrill and whimsy as the trio explores the nocturnal park, riding the attractions and wandering through a planetarium’s shimmering lights. Their carefree night is abruptly interrupted by three determined security guards, forcing Ricky, the loyal dog, and the Colonel to improvise a desperate escape through the darkness. They blast off on fireworks rockets and crash-land in a quiet countryside, each moment pushing the boundaries between danger and wonder.

In a forest clearing, the travelers encounter Dr. Gulliver, an elderly yet still adventurous space scientist who has built a rocket of his own. He’s no longer the rousing figure from the old tales, but a wiser mentor who believes in possibility. With him is his trusted assistant and a talking forest companion named Sylvester the crow (the Japanese edition refers to him simply as Crow). Together, the unlikely band—Ricky, the dog, the Colonel, Gulliver, and Crow—set out on a voyage through the Milky Way toward the Planet of Blue Hope, driven by a shared sense that a better world is possible.

Arriving at Blue Hope, they discover a troubling reversal of paradise. The planet’s inhabitants have been overrun by the Queen of the Purple Planet and her robots, created in a misguided quest for endless leisure that spiraled into oppression. The Blue Planet’s people have been reduced to doll-like beings under the robots’ control, their former vitality squeezed out of the world they inhabit. Gulliver’s scientific acumen and Ricky’s street-smart resilience combine with the team’s improvised gear—water pistols and water balloons—that deliver a refreshing, if whimsical, tactic: the water’s cool blast melts the villains’ hold and reawakens the planet’s original spark.

As Blue Hope regains its life, the inhabitants begin to awaken and rejoin the world as fully realized people, restored from the stillness that the robots had imposed. The mission’s success feels like a quiet miracle, earned through courage, curiosity, and a little ingenuity in the face of a seemingly overwhelming force. The tone remains hopeful and measured, never venturing into cynicism, and it emphasizes the idea that creativity and friendship can illuminate even the darkest corners of a vast cosmos.

When Ricky returns to the street, the world around him feels both familiar and changed. The dog, once a talkative companion, is now a regular canine, and the Colonel, who had seemed so indispensable, sits quietly in a rubbish bin as a reminder that adventures often take abrupt, surprising turns.
