In the present day, Veronica, Laysla De Oliveira sits with Father Greg, Luke Wilson in his church to discuss funeral arrangements for her recently deceased father, Jim, David Thewlis. Their quiet conversation becomes a doorway to Veronica’s history, as a series of flashbacks rearranges pieces of Jim’s life and Veronica’s own path through love, loss, and secrecy. Father Greg, puzzled by Jim’s choice of church for the service since Jim wasn’t a parish member, agrees to authorize the funeral but asks Veronica to share more about her father so he can deliver a meaningful eulogy. He visits an Armenian restaurant called Wild Orchid and uncovers serious violations in their processing of rabbit meat, a find that becomes a point of leverage in his ongoing concerns about food safety. He is skeptical of the restaurant owners’ claim that the meat is for a private event, and he returns later to verify. In another visit, Jim visits a German restaurant run by Clive’s family and damages the bathroom floor with feces altered to resemble rodent droppings, using this act to pressure Clive’s grandfather to allow a private chat with Clive. Clive, who saves Jim from a formal confrontation by speaking frankly, admits he knows Veronica felt responsible for Walter’s death and explains that Mike was the one who sent the text. Jim’s pursuit of truth culminates in a dramatic scene at Wild Orchid, where he is invited to speak as a guest of honor. His speech, a raw outpouring of anguish about Veronica’s imprisonment and the life she could have had in a loving home, shocks the other guests and prompts a police report when he voices the urge to retaliate against the bus driver. The following day, Jim discovers Benjamin—the rabbit Veronica had received as a gift years earlier—dead in his cage, and he returns to the restaurant with the animal’s feet to keep as good-luck charms, compelling the owners to comply with his demand in order to remove him from the scene.

In a tense final prison visitation, Jim explains to Veronica that the police have been scrutinizing his visits because there may be a joint plan to harm Mike.
