Dr. Ryan Stone begins her first mission onboard the Space Shuttle Explorer as part of the STS-157 crew. Excitement and nerves fill the air as they prepare to execute their planned tasks in space.

Stone and her commanding officer Matt Kowalski conduct a routine spacewalk to service the Hubble Space Telescope. Their lighthearted banter highlights the camaraderie between them and connection with Mission Control.

During the spacewalk, Mission Control loses communication with the Hubble Space Telescope. This prompts Stone to check for issues in the communications equipment, indicating something is wrong.

A sudden warning interrupts the mission, announcing a Russian missile strike on an old satellite. The event triggers a catastrophic chain reaction that creates a deadly cloud of debris.

The debris strikes the Space Shuttle Explorer, resulting in a violent disruption. Stone is forcefully ejected into the vastness of space, leaving her isolated and in peril.

With only 8% oxygen remaining, Stone struggles to orient herself in the terrifying emptiness of space. Kowalski bravely manages to reach her, and together they try to return to the damaged shuttle.

Upon reaching the Explorer, Stone and Kowalski discover that the shuttle is nonfunctional and their crew has tragically been lost. Time is of the essence as a new wave of debris looms just 90 minutes away.

Stone and Kowalski embark on a perilous journey to the nearby International Space Station (ISS). As they travel, they share personal stories and reflect on their lives, particularly Stone's loss of her daughter.

Arriving at the ISS, they find it eerily deserted and in disarray. Kowalski formulates a plan to use the Soyuz capsule for escape, recognizing the urgency of their situation.

In a brave act to save Stone, Kowalski uses the last power of his jet-pack to guide her while he stays behind. He instructs her to focus on survival as he gives her a last farewell.

Now alone, Stone enters the ISS through an airlock. She attempts unsuccessfully to re-establish contact with Kowalski and Mission Control, highlighting her isolation in a critical moment.

Stone faces the daunting task of undocking the Soyuz capsule while a fire escalates within the ISS. She must untangle the parachute lines, racing against time to escape the doom of debris.

As the situation becomes dire, Stone unexpectedly connects through radio with a Greenlandic Inuit fisherman, providing her with a moment of peace and inspiration amidst chaos.

In a critical moment of despair, Stone visualizes Kowalski encouraging her to use the Soyuz’s landing rockets for a final push towards the Chinese space station, Tiangong.

Stone lands the Shenzhou capsule in a lake after a harrowing descent through the atmosphere. Despite the water rushing in, she remains determined and swims to safety, ready for a new beginning.
