In the year 2020 AD, humanity embarks on its most ambitious endeavor yet: a mission to Mars. Four brave crew members, upon their arrival, stumble upon a mysterious geological formation nearby. Their excitement quickly turns to dread as they transmit their initial findings back to the command center stationed on the World Space Station. They make their way to the formation, only to be interrupted by a strange, ominous sound—initially believed to be interference from their Mars Rover.

As they attempt to scan the structure with radar, a violent vortex suddenly envelops it, resulting in calamity as two members of the crew are lost. A third crew member meets her fate when a hefty rock shatters her visor, leaving her vulnerable to the harsh Martian atmosphere. Luke Graham (Don Cheadle) emerges as the sole survivor, yet the situation worsens when the formation emits a powerful EMP, crippling their spacecraft’s electronics. Despite the grave circumstances, Luke manages to send a last message to the REMO (REsupply MOdule) orbiting Mars, a desperate bid for help.

Reacting swiftly to Commander Graham’s distress signal, Earth dispatches another crew to unravel the mystery behind the disaster and rescue any potential survivors. The crew consists of Commander Woodrow “Woody” Blake (Tim Robbins), Co-Commander Jim McConnell (Gary Sinise), alongside mission specialists Terri Fisher and Phil Ohlmyer. As they prepare for their arrival, disaster strikes again when a swarm of micrometeorites severely damages their ship’s hull, leading to a critical atmosphere leak.

In a race against time, the crew manages to patch the breach, but unbeknownst to them, the fuel tanks have also been compromised. When they ignite the engines, a catastrophic explosion obliterates their vessel, forcing the astronauts to don pressure suits and evacuate, praying they can reach the REMO. Facing overwhelming odds, Woody deduces that their only chance for survival is to propel himself towards the REMO using the remainder of his jet pack fuel, intending to secure a tether for the others. His daring attempt succeeds, but he becomes disconnected and is helplessly lost to the void of space. In a selfless act, Terri opts to cut her line to try and help him, prompting Woody to take the ultimate step for her safety by removing his helmet.

Upon reaching the Martian surface, the remaining crew is met by Luke, the last captain of the ill-fated first mission. He reveals harrowing details about his crew’s discoveries, specifically the enigmatic formation known as “the face.” During his solitude, Luke worked tirelessly to decode the sounds emanating from the structure, ultimately unveiling a pressing message encoded in the form of human DNA coordinates.

Together, the group learns that these strange signals serve as a key—a prompt requiring one final pair of chromosomes to complete the human genetic code. With the help of a robotic assistant, they transmit the necessary signal, triggering the structure to open. Curiosity gets the better of them as they step inside and find themselves in an unfamiliar environment resembling Earth’s atmosphere. Here, they are greeted with a spectacular projection of the solar system, amidst which a Martian apparition appears.

This Martian conveys the harrowing tale of their civilization’s fall—a devastating asteroid strike that obliterated Mars’s ecosystem, leading the Martians to disperse life forms to Earth during their exodus. Over millennia, these seeds proliferated into humanity, now standing on the very terrain of their ancestral home.

As the Martian’s image begins to fade, a poignant invitation is extended for one member of the crew to journey with the Martians to a new home. In a bold decision, Jim McConnell (Gary Sinise) opts to accept this offer. With bittersweet goodbyes, the remaining astronauts set their course back to Earth, while Jim embarks on a new adventure, racing away in a Martian craft at incredible speeds, far beyond their reach.
