Set in the quaint Midwestern town of Grandview, Illinois, the story follows Tim Pearson (C. Thomas Howell), a high school senior with aspirations to study oceanography in Florida post-graduation. His plans take a turn when his father, Roger (Ramon Bieri), lends him his brand new Cadillac for the senior prom with Bonnie Clark (Elizabeth Gorcey). However, a mishap occurs just when they are getting cozy by a stream; the parking brake fails, and they find themselves seeking a tow from Cody’s Speedway, a local garage.
Upon arrival, Bonnie’s father, Mr. Clark (M. Emmet Walsh), confronts Tim in a fit of rage, leading to a physical altercation. Fortunately, mechanic Michelle “Mike” Cody (Jamie Lee Curtis) steps in to defend him, enlisting the help of local demolition derby driver Ernie “Slam” Webster (Patrick Swayze) to tow the damaged vehicle. Slam’s day is already troubling as he looks for his wife, Candy (Jennifer Jason Leigh), who has been missing throughout the day.
The story unfolds further the next day when Tim pays a visit to his father at work. Roger sternly warns him against driving the Cadillac again. During this time, Tim expresses gratitude to Mike for assisting him with the car and even expresses interest in participating in the demolition derby. On his way to the Speedway, Tim meets Mike’s brother, Cowboy (not part of the listed cast), who has challenges of his own.
Meanwhile, Mike seeks financial help from her uncle Bob (William Windom), showing her determination to save the Speedway. They overhear Slam blowing off steam after a gaming loss, and Mike reminisces about their past times together. The next day brings more drama as Slam finds Candy with another man, Donny Vinton (Troy Donahue), leading to an explosive confrontation that results in Candy filing a restraining order against Slam.
As emotional turmoil weaves through the narrative, Mike finds herself supporting Slam while he grapples with his feelings for Candy. Despite inviting Mike to dinner, she has prior commitments, leading to further miscommunication and misunderstandings. Tim, on the other hand, is torn between his aspirations and familial obligations, ultimately resolving to head to Florida, despite Roger’s objections.
The plot thickens during a town meeting where Mike desperately seeks a chance to save the Speedway. Tim uncovers plans that threaten the venue, leading to a conflict with his father that forces him to reconsider his dreams. When Tim and Mike share a quiet moment over burgers, it further blurs the lines of their friendship.
As the narrative escalates, Slam’s frustration manifests dangerously during the demolition derby, leading to a confrontation that results in his arrest. Mike learns the Speedway has gone up in flames, and they investigate, uncovering that Cowboy might have been involved, igniting further tension. As complications arise, Slam’s troubles continue, but Mike remains steadfast, hinting that she still cares for him.
In the climactic resolution, Tim, on his way to pursue his dreams, receives a heartfelt gesture from Slam, who provides him with a car and money for his journey. In a beautifully wrapped ending, Mike and Slam embark on their new relationship amid community festivities, highlighting the intertwined fates among the characters. This tale encapsulates young love, aspirations, and the enduring bonds of friendship in an evolving small-town backdrop.
