Grandma's Boy (2006) – Full Plot Summary & Ending Explained

Read the complete plot breakdown of Grandma's Boy (2006), including all key story events, major twists, and the ending explained in detail. Discover what really happened—and what it all means.

A 35-year-old video game tester, Alex (Allen Covert](/actor/allen-covert)) finds himself in a sticky situation when he and his roommate Josh (Jonathan Loughran) are informed by their landlord, [Yuri ([Rob Schneider]), that they are being evicted due to unpaid rent. The root of the problem? Josh’s penchant for Filipino hookers! In a fit of rage, Yuri destroys one of their bongs and orders the movers to haul away everything they own, pushing Alex to the brink of homelessness.

Desperate for a place to crash, Alex first considers staying with his friend and weed dealer Dante (Peter Dante]), but soon learns that Dante has adopted a wild lion. His next option is his Grandmother [Lilly (Doris Roberts]), but Alex graciously declines her offer, opting instead to crash at his coworker [Jeff’s ([Nick Swardson]) house. However, after a rather embarrassing encounter with Jeff’s mother, Alex ends up spending the night in the office instead.

The next day, he is startled awake by Samantha (Linda Cardellini](/actor/linda-cardellini)), a consultant brought in for game development. While Alex shows off his gaming skills to the younger crew, Samantha meets with the company’s eccentric owner, [Mr. Cheezle ([Kevin Nealon]), and the arrogant game design whiz, JP ([Joel Moore]), who harbors an unrequited crush on her. Samantha, however, remains completely uninterested in JP’s advances.

Eventually, Alex humbles himself and accepts Lilly’s offer for a room, where he meets her quirky roommates – the over-sexed Grace (Shirley Jones) and the over-medicated Bea ([Shirley Knight]). Tasked with numerous household chores that are nearly impossible to complete due to the distractions of his grandmother and her friends, Alex begins to struggle with his work responsibilities.

His coworkers, including Jeff, Barry (Jonah Hill]), and [Kane ([Kelvin Yu]), are no help at all, forcing Alex to devise a plan. Upon discovering that Lilly and her friends are obsessed with the show Antiques Roadshow, he decides to score tickets to an episode taping to keep them entertained, allowing him some much-needed focus to finish his office tasks.

As the work on JP’s game progresses under Samantha’s guidance, Alex’s playful mention of living “with three hot babes” spirals into an exaggerated tale that blindsides his friends. They assume Alex is worn out from nightly escapades, while in reality, he’s burning the midnight oil developing his own game, Demonik. To his astonishment, Lilly shows talent for gaming, quickly mastering levels alongside him.

After successfully securing tickets for Samantha and their team to the show, he manages to get his roommates to bed early. Following a celebratory outing after completing the testing phase, they return to a scene of chaos at Lilly’s house — a commotion sparked by the three women after inadvertently consuming tea laced with Alex’s marijuana. In a turn of fate, Samantha admits to smoking as well, leading to a wild party fueled by Dante’s marijuana stash.

As the day unfolds, Alex and Samantha solidify their feelings for one another, inciting jealousy from JP, who has been unsuccessfully pursuing Samantha. Amidst this turmoil, JP’s desperation drives him to the lowest of acts: stealing Alex’s game and showcasing it, claiming it as his own during a crucial meeting. Enraged by the betrayal yet unable to prove ownership due to his secretive development process, Alex shuns his job and seeks solace with Dante, where they indulge in a potent joint.

Meanwhile, Samantha, determined to uncover the truth, enlists Lilly’s help. To reclaim Alex’s game, they concoct a plan: Lilly challenges JP to a face-off. Initially dismissive of the challenge, JP is shocked when Lilly turns out to be a formidable opponent. In a thrilling twist, she uses a hidden code to demolish JP’s character just as all hope seems lost, proving Alex’s ownership.

With a renewed sense of honor, Mr. Cheezle makes amends and reinstates Alex. The film culminates in a celebration of friendship and accomplishment with a lively party at Dante’s house, marking the much-anticipated release of Alex’s game.
