Golgo 13 Tetsurō Sagawa is a consummate professional in the world of hired violence. He is commissioned to assassinate Robert Dawson, the son of oil magnate Leonard Dawson and the heir to Dawson Enterprises, and he completes the hit with cold efficiency, setting off a chain of retaliation that drags him into a web of power, money, and danger.
Sometime after that first mission, Golgo is hired to take out Dr. Z, a shadowy crime boss who wields control over the Sicilian underworld. Infiltrating Dr. Z’s organization, Golgo gains access by turning a personal corner: he sleeps with Dr. Z’s daughter, Cindy Toshiko Fujita. The gambit pays off as he moves deep inside the operation, earning trust and an inside view of the criminal empire he’s about to destabilize.
Golgo’s stealth and nerve keep him alive when Dr. Z’s henchmen stage an ambush. After a tense game of cat-and-mouse, he calls Cindy, revealing that he suspects she is, in fact, Dr. Z, and soon afterwards he ends her life on a beach, severing a crucial link in the organization’s web. The danger continues to mount as Golgo navigates lethal traps and escapes ambushes laid by US Special Forces Lieutenant Bob Bragan and a handful of CIA operatives, all while a clockmaker—his local contact—is murdered by a genetically enhanced supersoldier named Snake.
With heavy support from the Pentagon, the FBI, and the CIA, Leonard Dawson—Golgo’s initial target’s father—becomes consumed by the need to avenge his son. His empire’s leverage grows as he contemplates the consequences of every move, pressing Golgo into a larger, more perilous game.
Golgo’s next assignment comes from a wealthy Holocaust survivor in San Francisco who wants an ex-Nazi official dead. Assisted by a local mechanic named Rita Kazue Komiya, Golgo executes the hit, but the escape is complicated when Bragan and his forces close in. The moment of triumph is offset by tragedy when Snake finds and murders Rita, underscoring the brutal cost of Golgo’s line of work.
Seeking rest and information, Golgo reunites with Pablo [Takeshi Aono], his informant in the Amazon, to uncover who arranged the hit on him. The path leads to a grim revelation that propels Golgo toward further danger in Miami, where a new wave of threats awaits.
Dawson’s obsession with revenge drives a disturbing tactic: he allows Snake to assault Laura Dawson [Reiko Mutoh], Robert’s widow, to coerce Golgo into cooperating. Dawson also dispatches his granddaughter Emily and his loyal butler Albert to an airport with orders to murder Golgo, a plan that underscores the depth of his merciless grip on power. In a tense confrontation with U.S. intelligence, Dawson presses for the release of Gold and Silver, two infamous murderers once part of a covert government project; the group resists, but fear of a destabilized economy makes them relent.
After a period of rest in Miami, Golgo moves on to New York City, where Emily makes another desperate attempt on his life and Albert falls to Golgo’s hand in self-defense. In the big city, Pablo informs Golgo that Dawson’s men are holed up in Dawson Castle, a high-rise fortress where the hostages—Dawson’s own wife and children—are said to be kept for ransom.
Golgo advances through Dawson Castle, fending off a flotilla of helicopter gunships and facing a brutal duel with Snake in an elevator. Snake stabs Golgo, but a helicopter later shoots the elevator to disable him. Golgo recovers, then fights Gold and Silver—two killers who later try to overwhelm him. He bludgeons Gold with the butt of his revolver and finishes Silver with a live grenade stuffed into Silver’s mouth, ending both threats.
Entering the final sanctum, Golgo confronts Dawson. After a brief, grim monologue from Dawson about power and legacy, the oil baron attempts suicide by leaping from the window. Golgo shoots him in the head mid-fall, and Dawson’s death is ruled an accident as the body crashes to the pavement below, erasing the man’s last assertion of control.
In the aftermath, Golgo crosses paths with Laura once more; she has become a prostitute and, recognizing the assassin, hesitates as she aims a gun. Golgo turns his back and walks away, and when Laura finally fires, the screen fades to black as he disappears into the night.
