Go Figure (2005) – Full Plot Summary & Ending Explained

Read the complete plot breakdown of Go Figure (2005), including all key story events, major twists, and the ending explained in detail. Discover what really happened—and what it all means.

Katelin Kingsford, a gifted teenage figure skater, dreams of becoming a champion and stealing the spotlight at the ice. At a key competition, she is spotted by the renowned Russian coach Natasha Goberman, whose name carries weight and expectation. Natasha runs an expensive boarding school, an opportunity that Katelin’s family can hardly afford, yet Natasha convinces the girls hockey team coach to award the last hockey scholarship so Katelin can train at the elite facility. The news fills Katelin with joy, but it also begins a demanding balancing act: hockey practice, figure skating sessions, and a heavy load of homework all collide in a single, grueling schedule.

Her new world is less welcoming than it seems. Spencer, a student assistant coach, constantly ridicules her, and the rest of the skating peers ostracize her as she navigates the unfamiliar terrain. Still, she finds a measure of comfort in her roommate, Amy ‘Hollywood’ Henderson, a fellow hockey player who offers friendship amid the pressure. The social friction, paired with the academic strain, pushes Katelin to the breaking point when she loses a private training session with one of her idols, Kristi Yamaguchi. Natasha feels the sting of disappointment as her student stumbles at a crucial moment, and the strain between coach and skater deepens.

A pivotal moment comes when Katelin’s life at home grows tense—her stuff is packed away as if she’s unwanted. She grabs a box of her ice gear and runs out, only to find a quiet moment of home truth after a talk with her mother. Refusing to quit, she returns to the boarding school with renewed resolve. Gradually, her grades improve, and she keeps training for both hockey and skating, sometimes in isolation, yet Spencer begins to admire her perseverance rather than mock it.

As the season unfolds, Katelin helps her hockey team push into the finals. Then a conflict arises: the hockey finals land on the same day as the Senior Nationals, the very event that scouts Olympic potential in skaters. She makes a bold choice to attend the hockey game, leaving the arena stunned at the turn of events. The team fights hard but falls by a single goal, though their road to the final is celebrated as a hard-won achievement.

Undeterred, Spencer rallies the team and brings Katelin’s figure-skating world to the forefront again. He gathers her gear and escorts her to the Senior Nationals, where drama unfolds as her suitcase bursts open and she is exposed as a “twirl girl” in front of the hockey squad. In the flurry, one of her skates goes missing, and Natasha lends her hockey skates to keep her in the competition. The start of her skating routine is rocky—she stumbles out of the gate—but the support of her teammates arrives just in time with the missing skate. After she completes her performance, the judges reveal the outcome: Katelin has earned a place on the United States Olympic team, a culmination born of tenacity, sacrifice, and an unlikely fusion of two demanding sports into one extraordinary dream.
