God of Gamblers

Ko Chun, Chow Yun-Fat, is a world-famous gambler so renowned for winning at every twist of fate that he is nicknamed the “God of Gamblers.” He keeps his true identity tightly hidden from the public, shunning photographs and maintaining a cool, collected image, marked by a slicked-back hairstyle, a jade pinky ring, and a fondness for Feodora-brand chocolate. He embodies a calm precision at the table, where every move feels inevitable, almost predestined.

Ko Chun travels to Tokyo for a high-stakes confrontation, accompanied by his girlfriend Janet, Sharla Cheung Man, and his assistant and cousin Ko Yee Lung Fong. In this foreign arena, he faces Ueyama, Tokyo’s top-ranked gambler, and outplays him in Mahjong and dice, prompting Ueyama to concede that Ko Chun truly is the God of Gamblers. The moment is tempered by a dangerous request: Ueyama asks Ko Chun to teach Chan Kam-sing, the infamous “Demon of Gamblers” from Singapore, a lesson by besting him in a climactic poker duel to avenge Ueyama’s father. Ko Chun agrees, merely asking for a box of chocolate as payment, and Ueyama responds by sending his bodyguard, Dragon, to accompany him for protection and guidance. When Ko Chun wins, Chan Kam-sing’s henchmen retaliate, and Ko Chun faces a brutal counterattack that he barely survives with Dragon’s assistance.

The story widens its scope with Little Knife, a well-meaning but mediocre gambler who idolizes the God of Gamblers. After setting a trap on a train for a neighbor as a prank, Knife’s path crosses with Ko Chun during a dangerous fall down a hill, resulting in Ko Chun suffering amnesia and regressing to a childlike state. Knife, who now calls the nameless stranger “Chocolate” because of his apparent love for chocolate, initially finds Ko Chun’s innocence trying but soon recognizes the raw gambling talent hidden within, deciding to nurture it. Knife’s early impatience gives way to genuine care as he tries to rebuild the lost memory and restore the man behind the persona.

Back at Ko Chun’s mansion, Janet disappears from sight for ten days, triggering fear and suspicion. Ko Yee, who is jealous of Ko Chun’s wealth, makes advances on Janet, who rebuffs him. In a violent turn, Yee unexpectedly knocks Janet off a balcony, killing her, and then burns the incriminating tape she was recording. Yee’s treachery deepens as he allies with Chan Kam-sing and another rival in their search for Ko Chun. The danger intensifies when assassins close in on the trio, and Dragon arrives once more to shield them, leading to a fierce showdown in a shopping center. Knife fights alongside Ko Chun to save him, and Dragon is wounded in the exchange. The intensity rattles Ko Chun, forcing a rare glimpse of the man behind the mask as he briefly returns to his true self to dispense lethal force.

Frantic and broken, Ko Chun wakes in a hospital with his memories unclear. He’s confronted with the revelation that Janet had died, and he learns of Ko Yee’s duplicity from a betrayed but feigning ally. Knife arrives with warnings that Yee’s loyalties are shifting, but the warnings are ignored as Yee’s influence continues to threaten Ko Chun’s life. Yee then bestows Chan Kam-sing with special eyeglasses designed to cheat by reading hidden markings on the cards, a weapon meant to tilt the climactic poker matchup in Chan’s favor.

As the yacht arena becomes the final battleground, Ko Chun, Yee, Ueyama, and Dragon board Chan Kam-sing’s vessel for the decisive five-card stud game. Knife, who has managed to sneak aboard, tries to warn Ko Chun of the danger, but Chun, still wary of interference, initially dismisses the plea. Chan Kam-sing swiftly dominates through the first rounds, aided by the glasses that reveal card markings. When Ko Chun pushes all of his assets into the pot, Chan Kam-sing betrays his own arrogance, only to reveal that Ko Chun’s deck has a hidden edge: he has secretly altered the card markings and uses contact lenses to read them, turning the game in his favor. In a dramatic twist, Ko Chun tricks Chan Kam-sing into shooting Ko Yee, who lies dying as Janet’s tape—burned earlier—re-emerges, falling back into Chan Kam-sing’s possession.

Ko Chun departs the scene as law enforcement arrives to arrest Chan Kam-sing, leaving Knife distressed over the missed opportunity to warn Ko Chun. Later, Ko Chun surprises Knife at his home, admitting that he remembered Knife from the hospital and knew of Ko Yee’s betrayal all along. He had to feign ignorance to execute his plan properly, and he promises to make it up to Knife by taking him to Las Vegas as his gambling partner.
