Money God, Alan Tam, has caused trouble in Heaven and, as punishment, is sent to Earth to do good deeds for mankind. His deific powers are restricted and can only be restored at moments of great need via a charm tucked inside a silk brocade bag bearing the words “Kung Hei Fat Choy.” When Money God crashes into Hong Kong, the impact opens a massive hole and triggers a series of blackouts that throw the city into confusion. Among the early arrivals are policemen and journalists, including Ellen Fung, Ann Bridgewater, who catches sight of the odd deity amidst the crowd. Because of his unusual Hanfu attire, he’s quickly mistaken for a mental patient and chased through the streets. He escapes into a water bottle that is then picked up by Ben, the boy nephew of Ellen.
At home, Money God appears before Ben and wins the boy over by making his toys perform. He convinces the child that he is a true deity, but Fung, Dean Shek Tin, the boy’s father, thinks the newcomer is a robber and confronts him. Money God eventually earns Fung’s trust by presenting a miracle—summoning a rain cloud and turning a cup into a gleaming ball of gold—though he shuns the moment when Fung’s greed is revealed and the ball becomes ordinary again. He explains that genuine wealth comes from within, through acts of kindness, and he decides to help Fung’s fast-food business instead of chasing quick riches. If Fung cooperates, Money God promises to make him rich within three months. Moved by the gesture, Fung accepts Money God as a kind of adopted father and even helps him blend in with the crowd by giving him a makeover.
With Fung’s blessing, Money God encourages him to smile more and to treat staff and customers with consideration. The restaurant’s fortunes begin to turn as Fung becomes more humane and attentive, and patrons start flocking back to the business.
Trouble soon follows in the form of a loan shark named Mo, George Lam Tsz-Cheung who is pushing Fung to repay a debt. Mo’s greed and aggressive campaign tactics raise the stakes, and when he runs for office, Money God steps onto the campaign stage to deliver a counter-speech that earns a standing ovation. Mo’s response is brutal: he and his henchmen assault Fung, throwing him from a balcony. Money God rescues him, but the encounter deepens Mo’s desperation to exploit Money God’s otherworldly influence for personal gain.
Mo then plots revenge by summoning three Ghost Exterminators to confront Money God and Fung’s family at a toy fair. Money God repels them by animating a swarm of military toys, turning a chaotic scene into a showcase of his protective powers. In the midst of the mayhem, Ben witnesses Mo abduct Ellen, and he rushes to alert his father, triggering a highway chase across Hong Kong. Money God attempts to intervene with his powers, only to discover that his charm has been lost—Ben had mistaken the pouch for a candy bag, and the magical token is missing at a critical moment.
Ellen fights off her abductors, causing their car to crash. Seizing the chance, Money God shifts into a different strategy and, using the persona of the spirit of his own father, persuades Mo to use his money for good. Mo experiences a genuine turnaround, writing off Fung’s debt and pledging to mend his ways, while his henchmen are left to reckon with the consequences. The group celebrates this surprising turn of events at Mo’s headquarters.
Meanwhile, NASA has caught wind of Money God’s presence in Hong Kong and mistakes his Hanfu garb for alien technology. They dispatch a squad equipped with plasma guns to capture him for study. Mo learns of the impending arrival and helps the group to escape to a rooftop, where Money God realizes his charm has still not been recovered. The militia’s shots puncture his defenses, sending him plummeting toward the street, but as he falls, his body lights up with the characters “Kung Hei Fat Choy” and his powers return. He converts the plasma fire into gold coins that rain onto the sidewalks, pleasing bystanders and prompting NASA to halt their pursuit.
Ultimately, Money God is summoned back to Heaven, having fulfilled his mission to guide Fung and help Mo reform, and to show that generosity and responsibility can transform a city. In the years that follow, Fung becomes a successful restaurateur, Mo ascends to the role of mayor, and many former members of Mo’s loan-sharking circle transition into public service, suggesting a brighter future for the people who crossed paths with the deity during his stay on Earth.
