Averell accidentally reveals their presence, triggering a wild police chase through the streets of New York. The chase brings the Daltons under the eyes of the law in a dramatic early confrontation.

The Daltons return to Central Park to retrieve their loot, only to be confronted by Lucky Luke. Piotr, leader of the immigrant caravan, explains that they have 80 days to reach California or Crook and Bartleby will profit from delays. Lucky Luke weighs the risks and reveals the larger scheme threatening both the travelers and the Daltons.

To outrun Crook's plan, Lucky Luke chooses the dangerous route toward California instead of the safe, longer path. The caravan heads toward Hole Gutch, venturing through hostile terrain that tests their resolve. The decision sharpens the conflict between the law, the Daltons, and the scheming developers.

The caravan trudges through Hole Gutch, crosses the Deadly Desert of Death, and skirts the territory of the Crazy Wolves. Among the passengers are a Chinese chef couple, a schoolteacher Miss Littletown, a mule driver, and a barber, all hoping to reach the promised land. The crew's morale flickers as thirst, dust, and danger threaten to break their ranks.

Crook and Bartleby plant traps along the route in a bid to derail the caravans. Their schemes are clever but repeatedly thwarted by Lucky Luke and the determined settlers. The pursuit grows tenser as the deadline looms.

Crook deliberately drains the water supplies for the thirsty settlers crossing the Deadly Desert of Death. The caravan faces a life-or-death test as people struggle to find moisture and shade. Luke stays focused on protecting the innocents while keeping an eye on the Daltons.

Averell dramatizes a cockroach in his shoe, triggering an accidental rain dance that disrupts the caravan with comic chaos. The moment provides levity amid the harsh journey, even as the tension with Crook's traps remains. The group clings to humor to endure the heat and hardship.

Lucky Luke defeats the Daltons and captures Crook and Bartleby, delivering them to the pursuing authorities. The settlers celebrate hard-won justice as the sun sets over the frontier. The Daltons and their co-conspirators are taken away to face their consequences.
