Haley Macklin is academically advanced but feels like an outsider because she skipped a grade. Her sharp contributions in class provoke jealousy among her peers. Frustrated by rejection, she posts negative comments about the popular group on a social networking site.

Haley unexpectedly befriends Alexa Simons, a popular girl who is head over heels for Derek. Haley offers to help Alexa with schoolwork, and her presence begins to break down the social barriers between Haley and the other girls. She is gradually accepted by most of the popular clique.

As she bonds with Alexa, Haley's behavior shifts at home. She disobeys her parents and becomes rude to her sister Kylie. Melissa, Haley's mother, tries to be lenient, but Ray, her father, remains stricter about boundaries.

The popular girls discover the harsh comments Haley posted online and feel betrayed. They suspect Haley was manipulating them, and the trust within the group begins to dissolve. Some teammates remain wary while others still accept her.

The group decides to stage a physical attack on Haley and film it for online posting. Haley is invited to Alexa’s house, unaware of the trap awaiting her. The plan aims to publicly humiliate Haley and reinforce the clique's dominance.

Police move in and arrest Alexa, Kristin, Taylor, Becca, and Lauren for kidnapping and battery; they are later released on bail. The media labels Alexa as the ringleader, while the other girls face charges tied to the attack. The community reaction begins to unfold.

Back at school, some students cheer the girls for their 'courage,' revealing a troubling social dynamic. Meanwhile, the video circulates nationwide, sparking public outrage and scrutiny of the school environment and online culture.

In a confrontation in a school restroom, Alexa reprimands Haley, escalating tensions. Melissa steps in to deescalate, while Marylou presses for accountability, warning that the girls face severe penalties if they continue.

The girls are tried and convicted, with Alexa receiving three years' probation, 100 hours of community service, and restitution of $1,700. Kristin gets 15 days in custody and three years' probation, while Becca, Taylor, and Lauren each receive one year of probation, with Lauren paying an additional $2,000. All five are barred from social networks for the duration of their probation.

The film ends with Haley and Melissa leaving the courthouse, feeling relief as convictions take effect. Reporters wait on the steps for a post-trial interview, signaling a sense of closure and the beginning of recovery for Haley.
