What Happens in Geetha: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of Geetha (1981) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

Geetha is a college-going student who co-organizes a charity concert in her college. Sanjay, a charismatic singer, performs at the show, delivering the track Santhoshakke. Floored by his performance and good looks, she pursues him, inviting him to her badminton club to play, and gradually she succeeds in getting closer. However, Geetha's father Srinivas — who is dealing with a heart ailment — adds a layer of concern to their budding romance.

Geetha begins to show signs of illness, with symptoms like gripping her neck tightly and screaming at times. After another of Sanjay's concerts, she confesses her love to him. He initially struggles to remember her, and only then does he start to realize his feelings and gradually falls in love with her.

Geetha's mother, Dr. Mukta, learns from doctors that Geetha suffers from blood cancer, a truth kept from Geetha's father. The family keeps this information from him as Geetha's condition progresses, with the illness taking a toll on her eyes and causing other visible symptoms.

Geetha is eager to learn driving and pesters Sanjay to teach her. He becomes flustered but eventually opens up about his past—his ex-girlfriend Sunanda, who died in a brake-failure car accident.

The couple decides to marry, and Sanjay speaks with Geetha's mother, who reveals the illness to him. Undeterred, they plan for a future together even as Geetha's health continues to deteriorate.

In the final act, Sanjay, with the help of Dr. Rudrappa, obtains an interferon drug, an alleged cancer treatment, imported from California. He retrieves it at the airport, but Geetha passes away before he can bring the medicine to her home.
