In the rural desert town of Laramie, New Mexico, 16-year-old Shade Evans is captivated by the local cinema, immersing herself in melodramatic Mexican romances. Her favorite actress, Elvia Rivero, becomes the focal point of her dreams and aspirations, offering her an escape from her challenging home life.

After a movie screening, Shade reunites with her 18-year-old sister, Trudi, at the diner where their mother works. The atmosphere turns tense when Trudi makes a derogatory comment about the busboy, provoking his resignation and leaving Shade feeling ashamed of her sister's racist remarks.

That night, ruminating on her mother's problematic love life and inspired by an Elvia Rivero film, Shade attempts to reach out to her estranged father, John. However, she hangs up as soon as he answers, revealing her struggles with familial relationships.

The following day, Trudi begins working at the diner to save money and escape Laramie. Meanwhile, Shade returns to the cinema, only to be distracted when the film abruptly stops, prompting her to investigate and meet Javier, the busboy turned projectionist.

That evening, Shade's mother, Nora, encounters Raymond, an ex-lover, who tries to rekindle their romance. After a brief kiss, Nora firmly rejects him, highlighting her struggle to move on from past relationships.
