Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga reveals that the chaos in the wastelands was partly fueled by Dementus, a self-proclaimed emperor with big dreams of domination. He believed his cunning and military strength made him unstoppable, but his actions proved otherwise. Early on, we see that Dementus tried to manipulate the biker gangs to serve his interests, especially by using Octoboss and his Rock Riders to take over Gas Town and later, the oil rig. His plan was to create a distraction and seize control of resources, but his arrogance and impulsiveness ultimately led to his downfall. For example, he painted some of Octoboss’ men silver, mimicking War Boys in a scheme to scare Gas Town into surrendering, but when the plan failed and Gas Town’s leader saw through the deception, Dementus lost patience and shot at one of Octoboss’ Riders. This act of betrayal severed Dementus’ last loyalty with the biker gang, especially Octoboss, who then turned rogue.

Once Octoboss and his men realized Dementus’ true nature—that he lacked principle, morals, and the ability to lead—they chose to abandon him. Their rebellion was solidified when Dementus killed one of their riders impulsively, throwing away the trust and future alliance they might have had. The rogue riders, now free from Dementus’ control, wreaked havoc, attacking from the skies and forcing Jack and Furiosa to defend their fortress to reach safety. In the end, Dementus’ overconfidence and reckless decisions cost him everything. Without the support of a loyal and understanding leader like Octoboss, he faced defeat and isolation. The story underscores how arrogance, betrayal, and poor judgment can topple even the most ambitious tyrants, leaving chaos in the wastelands that Furiosa’s saga has now shed light on.
