Funeral Parade of Roses

As a child, Eddie is abused by her father. When the father abandons the family, Eddie tells her mother she can rely on her, but the mother laughs. Later Eddie discovers her mother with another man and stabs both of them with a knife.

In adulthood, Eddie works at Genet, a Tokyo gay bar that employs several transgender women. The bar is managed by drug dealer Gonda, while Leda acts as madame and lives there. Eddie becomes part of the bar’s intimate social circle.

Leda begins to suspect that Eddie and Gonda have a secret sexual relationship. Gonda promises to make Eddie the new madame of the Genet bar, signaling a shift in power and trust.

Eddie witnesses a street protest and enters an art exhibit where a voice on a tape discusses masking identities to avoid loneliness. The encounter prompts reflection on how people present themselves to the world.

Eddie goes shopping with friends, visits clothing stores and a hair salon, and even enters a men’s bathroom in a skirt. The outing showcases Eddie’s exploration of appearance and gender presentation.

Eddie associates with Guevara, a member of a filmmaking collective. After viewing one of Guevara’s works, Eddie and friends smoke marijuana and dance, linking Eddie to an avant-garde circle.

While out with two friends, Eddie is confronted by a trio of women, leading to a fight. The incident underscores the volatile dynamics of the group and Eddie’s social circle.

Gonda visits Leda and is angered when she feigns concern for Eddie’s well-being. The confrontation reveals tension between the bar’s management and Eddie’s evolving position.

Leda is found dead in her bed, having committed suicide, wearing a veil and surrounded by roses. Two dolls with nails lie on the floor, adding a disturbing visual to the tragedy.

After Leda’s funeral, Eddie is promoted to madame of the Genet. The promotion consolidates Eddie’s rising power within the bar and the circle around it.

While Eddie showers, Gonda finds a photo book showing Eddie as a child with her parents. He realizes Eddie’s mother was his former lover, suggesting that Eddie is his child. Gonda then kills himself with a knife.

Upon witnessing Gonda’s suicide, Eddie takes a knife and stabs herself in both eyes, then staggers outside in front of a crowd. The act closes the film with a shocking, self-inflicted ending.
