Ari Alex Dimitriades, a dissolute 19-year-old second-generation Greek Australian, lives with his working-class parents and sister in Melbourne. He is unemployed and carries a growingly volatile relationship with his Marxist father Dimitri Tony Nikolakopoulos, who lectures him on responsibility. His mother Sophia Eugenia Fragos shares a tender, protective bond with her son, yet she remains deeply worried about his drift. Unbeknownst to his parents, Ari covertly experiments with illicit drugs and casual sexual encounters with men. His sister Alex Andrea Mandalis likewise hides her own relationship with a Lebanese Australian from their parents, adding to the family’s unspoken tensions.

Ari’s circle comprises friends who are also second-generation Greek Australians. He is disappointed in his best friend Joe Damien Fotiou for choosing convention over passion by marrying Dina Dora Kaskanis. Another close friend, Johnny Paul Capsis, defies convention as an extroverted cross-dresser who adopts the persona of Toula. He also finds an easy connection with Joe’s sister, Betty Elena Mandalis, who shares a penchant for risky behaviors and voice her rebellion against Greek cultural expectations.

After spending time at his brother Peter’s Alex Papps student house, Ari becomes aware of romantic chemistry with Peter’s Anglo housemate, Sean Julian Garner. At Joe’s house, his mother Tasia María Mercedes privately tells Ari what she has seen in his tea leaves, prophesying trouble and guiding him toward a path she believes he should take. > Find a girl, get married, and then it doesn’t matter what you do.

Ari and Dina share drug use, and he has a partial sexual encounter with Betty. Later, Ari goes to meet Sean at a club, while Johnny—still in drag—persuades him to head to another venue. Sean agrees to reconnect with them later that night. The evening takes a grim turn when a taxi ride with Johnny is halted by the police, leaving both men humiliated, stripped, and beaten at the station. Johnny suffers brutal abuse at the hands of a Greek Australian officer, while Ari walks away relatively unscathed and continues to search for connection. After leaving the club, Ari ends up at Melbourne’s docks in the early morning light, dancing in a Greek-inspired display of movement and reflection, contemplating the meaninglessness he feels inside.
