In 1944, amid the turmoil of World War II in Ukraine, the remnants of the 5th SS Panzer Division Wiking are fleeing the advancing Red Army. They seek shelter in an abandoned cabin, hoping for a brief reprieve from the fighting. As night deepens, the group confronts a far older menace than the war has offered: vampires that emerge from a hidden crypt beneath the cabin. Among the soldiers is Colonel Jaffe [Peter Jason], and the encounter with the undead sets a grim tone for what follows, hinting at a history of violence that stretches beyond the battlefields. The scene unfolds with a quiet restraint that gives way to a brutal, otherworldly confrontation, a prelude to the film’s two timelines colliding later on.
In present-day Sweden, doctor Annika and her teenage daughter Saga are relocating to a town in Lappland so Annika can work near the renowned geneticist Gerhard Beckert. The polar night has begun, casting the region into endless twilight with one month until dawn, a detail that weighs on Saga’s mood and imagination. As the move unfolds, Saga finds a friend in Vega, a mysterious goth girl who invites her to a party. The atmosphere is tense but curious, and Saga, with little else to do, decides to join in.
Meanwhile, at the hospital, a medical student named Sebastian uncovers pills Beckert has been using to treat a comatose patient. He initially suspects they’re ordinary drugs, but his curiosity and naivety push him to test them. The pills trigger a cascade of unusual effects: Sebastian develops acute hearing and keener vision, gains the ability to understand and talk to dogs, and experiences a mounting, thirst-like ache that he cannot ignore. Vega arrives at Sebastian’s home to retrieve the pills, claiming she paid for them, but Sebastian swears he has forgotten to obtain them for the party. In a desperate scramble, Vega takes the pills and makes off, leaving Sebastian unsettled and wary.
At the hospital, Annika attends to the unconscious patient who bites her, an assault that prompts her to seek help from Beckert. Beckert’s response is chilling: he knocks Annika unconscious, a bleak sign of the control he wields over the situation. The truth about Beckert comes into sharp focus as the narrative reveals his past: he is the lone survivor of the massacre tied to the cabin incident, and he has been conducting a dangerous experiment with vampirism. He brings a child vampire named Maria with him to northern Sweden, initially with the aim of finding a cure, but his experiments gradually shift toward creating a new species that blends human and vampire traits. The pills Annika encounters are capsules of vampire blood that Beckert has covertly used to spread and study vampirism, a discovery that deepens the danger around him and his work.
Annika manages to free herself and confront Beckert, who transforms into a fearsome, monstrous vampire form. She ultimately defeats him by driving a stake into his heart and then running him over with an ambulance, a decisive act that destroys him and brings into sharp relief the impending threat of vampirism spreading through the living world.
Back at the party, Vega hands the remaining pills to John, the host, who dissolves one in his own mouth and then covertly drops the rest into a bowl of punch to liven things up. The careless act has catastrophic consequences as the pills infect guests, including Vega herself, turning the party into a chaotic bloodbath as more people succumb to vampirism. Saga retreats to the basement to hide, but she is pursued by Vega, forcing a desperate chase into the backyard. In a grim reversal, Saga manages to survive by impaling Vega on a garden gnome, the macabre moment punctuated by Vega’s own grumbled complaint about her undignified death.
As the night spirals out of control, the police arrive to investigate the disturbance, only to be overwhelmed by the rapidly spreading vampirism. The neighbors, mistaking the ruckus for a drug-related incident, fail to grasp the true danger. Saga is whisked away in an ambulance, the city threatening to descend into a wall of fangs and fear as the night presses on. The surviving vampires close in, surrounding the vehicle and signaling that the nightmare is far from over. John’s taunt lingers in the air: Don’t worry. This will be over any minute. Dawn is… just a month away!
In the tense final moments of the ambulance ride, Saga encounters Maria, the child vampire, who speaks of their future as sisters. The driver glances back and sees Annika, her eyes burning red with vampiric hunger, a striking image that suggests the two timelines may be converging in ways that blur the line between savior and predator.
Don’t worry. This will be over any minute. Dawn is… just a month away!
