Fathers' Day

Scott Andrews runs away from home with Nikki. Collette, his mother, seeks out Jack Lawrence, her ex, and asks him to help find Scott. Jack initially refuses but softens when his work keeps him in San Francisco overnight.

Collette tells Jack that Scott might be his son. Jack initially refuses to get involved, but changes his mind when his work trip keeps him overnight in San Francisco. The possibility of fatherhood becomes real for him.

Writer Dale Putley receives a call from Collette and learns that the same story about a possible father also involves him. The news destabilizes his plans and spurs him into action. He contemplates his next steps with a mix of resolve and vulnerability.

Dale and Jack decide to pool their efforts and search for their missing sons with little help from Russ, Nikki's father. The two men realize they share a common goal despite believing different boys are missing. They form an uneasy alliance to track Scott down.

They visit Nikki's mother Shirley and learn that Nikki is on the road following Sugar Ray. When asked for photos of their sons, they realize Collette has told both men the same story. Collette confesses she doesn’t know which man is Scott’s father and begs them to find him.

The two men head for Sacramento and locate Scott, who is drunk and lovestruck after Nikki dumps him. They bring him to their hotel room to explain the situation, but Scott remains wary. The next day, he shows little enthusiasm about the potential paternity, and Nikki heads toward Sugar Ray’s tour.

Jack leaves Dale to watch over Scott, but Scott escapes by dumping coffee on Dale’s lap. The moment heightens the tension between the trio and deepens Scott’s insistence on autonomy. They are forced to chase him again as the road trip continues.

Dale and Jack head to Reno to follow Sugar Ray’s next gig, hoping to locate Scott among the band’s fans. Their search is driven by a mix of desperation and paternal concern. The stakes rise as they close in on the youth’s whereabouts.

In Reno, Scott meets Nikki and the groupies and runs into two drug dealers he previously swindled. He tries to escape, but is accidentally run down by Jack and Dale, leaving him with a broken arm. The incident intensifies the urgency to protect him.

That night, the three bond as Scott opens up about Nikki being his first love and the reasons his parents disapprove. They drive to Nikki’s hotel to help him, but the drug dealers spot Scott and plan to kidnap and kill him. Scott escapes in Jack’s rental car.

The next day, Jack suspects Scott lied about them being his fathers and quits. Carrie, Jack’s wife, appears concerned and pushes Jack to face the truth. They locate Scott at Sugar Ray’s concert, where he confronts Nikki and is heartbroken; a chaotic fight erupts in the crowd as the dealers attack.

Freed from jail the next day, Jack, Dale, and Scott head home. Collette and Bob embrace their son, and Collette reveals that neither Jack nor Dale is his father. Scott, moved by his parents’ desire to keep him, lies to both men, telling them they are the fathers, which Jack realizes but accepts as a hopeful sign of fatherhood.

Having borrowed Jack’s car to get to the airport, Dale spots a woman with car trouble. He learns that Virginia is single and heading to San Francisco, and offers her a lift, much to Jack’s annoyance. The moment hints at a potential new direction for Dale after the chaotic events.
