Thomas, portrayed by Don McKellar, discreetly navigates through the customs check at an airport, with vigilant officials observing him from behind a security mirror. A conversation unfolds among the guards on how to identify potential smugglers. Upon returning home, it is revealed that Thomas has cunningly concealed large exotic eggs taped to his abdomen, successfully bringing them through customs undetected.

Transitioning to Exotica, a lively dance club with an enticing hot house ambiance, we meet Francis, played by Bruce Greenwood. A regular patron of the club, he often watches his favorite dancer, Christina, a captivating performer portrayed by Mia Kirshner, mesmerize the audience with her School Girl act. Overseeing the club’s atmosphere is Eric, interpreted by Elias Koteas, the DJ with a complicated backstory involving Christina and dual responsibilities as a bouncer, maintaining order among the guests who may get too familiar with the performers.

The following day, Francis, an accountant by profession, visits Thomas’s pet shop to inspect his accounting records, oblivious to the rare and exotic egg that Thomas is incubating at his home. Later, during an opera performance, Thomas unexpectedly encounters a man who turns out to be the customs officer that had scrutinized him at the airport. Tensions rise when this customs officer later pilfers the egg from Thomas, leading to revelations about Francis being part of a broader investigation focused on unraveling Thomas’s untaxed business dealings.

The narrative also delves into the fraught relationship between Eric and Christina, one colored by past love turned sour. Eric’s unresolved feelings towards Christina intensify, especially once he learns of her connection with Francis, leading to jealousy and bitterness. His resentment is compounded by the fact that he has made an arrangement with Zoe, the club’s owner, played by Arsine Khanjian, to allow her to have his child—an arrangement that complicates his emotions further.

As the story unfolds, Eric uses his position as announcer to subtly express his disdain towards Francis, even going so far as to suggest that he makes an inappropriate advance toward Christina while she dances. When Francis, during one of Christina’s performances, touches her stomach, Eric’s fury erupts, resulting in a violent ejection of Francis from the club.

Determined to reclaim his pride and confront Eric, Francis solicits Thomas’s help, leading to a climactic encounter that showcases the tangled relationships and emotions between the characters involved. The film weaves a complex narrative, leaving viewers to ponder the underlying tensions and motivations driving these intricate connections.
