Lucía, a dedicated waitress, finds herself on an urgent phone call with her boyfriend, the writer Lorenzo, whose persistent melancholy has begun to cast a shadow over their relationship. Deeply troubled by his emotional state, she decides to leave her job and rush to his side, hoping to provide the comfort he desperately needs. Yet, upon her arrival, she is met with an unsettling stillness; the apartment stands empty, save for a haunting suicide note that sends her into a tailspin of fear and anxiety. In a panic, she hastily contacts the police and flees the scene, consumed by dread.

In her search for solace, Lucía escapes to the enchanting Balearic Islands—an intriguing destination once celebrated by Lorenzo, but now a place he regards with bitterness. This change of scenery represents a chance for her to escape the haunting memories of the past and embark on a new chapter of her life.

Flash back six years, when Lorenzo’s world was a whirlwind of transient pleasures. During a magical evening on a moonlit beach, he had a passionate dalliance with the married Elena, who later discovered she was pregnant with his child. Despite her attempts to track him down, she never learned his true identity.

Now, in the present day, we see Lorenzo grappling with a creative block as he shares his struggles with his literary agent over dinner. It is here that he encounters Lucía, whose bold proclamation of love leads them down a path filled with intense passion and desire, weaving her into the fabric of his existence.

The film deftly intertwines past and present narratives, including those from Lorenzo’s own writing, showcasing a rich array of interconnected characters and stories that unfold throughout the plot.

As time progresses, Lorenzo’s battles with his editor over a delayed manuscript continue, while his connection with Lucía grows deeper. Simultaneously, Lorenzo clandestinely visits his unseen daughter, the child conceived during that fateful encounter with Elena, meeting her babysitter Belén. This unexpected meeting evolves into a flirtatious exchange, as Belén shares captivating tales about her mother’s scandalous past and current romantic escapades.

Oblivious to Lucía’s plight, Lorenzo draws inspiration from these encounters, intricately weaving them into his novel while keeping the truth of his fatherhood hidden from both his daughter and Lucía. As the web of intrigue thickens, he finds himself increasingly captivated by the drama surrounding him.

Belén’s playful flirtation leads her to invite Lorenzo to Elena’s home under the pretext of babysitting Luna, his daughter. As Luna drifts off to sleep, Lorenzo spins a tale for her, only to find their moment of intimacy shocking interrupted by a horrific accident: the family’s protective Rottweiler, in a fit of aggression, kills Luna. Stunned and filled with horror, Belén stands frozen as Lorenzo flees, consumed by an overwhelming wave of despair.

Over time, Lorenzo’s writing turns dark, mirroring his inner turmoil and fixating on themes of grotesque sexuality and mortality. He reaches out anonymously to Elena, now residing on an island seeking solace in memories of happier times. He pens her a heartfelt story about a child who finds joy in the sea, hoping to uplift her spirits. Yet this act only deepens his guilt toward Lucía, causing their relationship to unravel.

In the present, Lucía unexpectedly forms a bond with Carlos, a scuba diver on the island, through whom she meets Elena, who has opened a charming inn. Unbeknownst to either woman, they share a profound connection through Lorenzo. When Lucía mentions Lorenzo’s name and his previous visit to the island, Elena starts to piece together the complex puzzle of their intertwined lives. A photograph of Luna, strikingly resembling her father and familiar from Lorenzo’s novel, jolts Lucía into a moment of clarity.

Lorenzo’s editor unexpectedly arrives at his hospital room, where he is recuperating from an undisclosed accident. Upon enquiring about Lucía, the editor reveals the heart-wrenching news that she likely thinks he is dead, igniting Lorenzo’s interest and prompting him to request a visit to the island.

When he arrives at the inn, both women are met with the shocking revelation that Lorenzo is not only alive but also on the mend from his injuries. As they navigate the emotional complexities of their intertwined fates, Lucía, Elena, and Lorenzo are thrust into a journey of understanding, facing the ghosts of their past while striving to carve out a new future together.
